Secret 9 - My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, fanfiction

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2014-01-01 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is two mashed up pictures, one of a tall pole with bright signs and advertisements in a city with tall buildings, and another of the town of Ponyville from the cartoon "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic". There is a silhouette of a man? in front of the city, and the silhouette of a cartoon pony in front of the cartoon town.]

If you've ever written a story for the "Conversion Bureau" shared universe, and it wasn't a parody or an attack on the premise, I won't read, comment on, or acknowledge the existence of anything you've ever written.

As a rule of thumb, most multi-author settings in this fandom are creepy as fuck, but the Conversion Bureau takes it to a whole new level, and authors who're willing to write for it tend to put their misanthropy into all their other stories. Usually at length.

Notes (warning, TV Tropes link)

From TV Tropes:

Conversion Bureau fics are set on an Earth some time in the future, where the island (or pocket universe) of Equestria has suddenly appeared in the sea. Unfortunately, the realm of Equestria is pushing into Earth's territory, and the magic of Equestria is lethal to humans. In a few short years, Equestria will flood Earth with magic, and there will be nowhere left for humanity to live. To fix this, Princess Celestia sets up "Conversion Bureaus" all around Earth, offering the humans the chance to be turned into ponies and eventually live in Equestria.

Any MLP:FIM secrets that get posted to F!S are always a fascinating glimpse into the hellhole that is bronydom.

Usually. Some of them are just ships.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Not always. I remember there was one cute one about someone with a service sector job who used thinking of Pinkie Pie to avoid flying off the handle at annoying customers.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
ponies, like power, are neither good nor evil, it's all about how you use them

On a scale from one to sending-an-underage-rape-victim-pictures-of-her-OC-being-violently-sexually-assaulted, how much would I regret searching for this "Conversion Bureau" AU in order to have more context for understanding this secret?

It's about medium in terms of the kinds of things people post on Fandom Wank about, which means it's much, MUCH less awful than the things people post on Fandom Unfunny about. I don't think it's soul-scarring, just creepy (particularly after Chatoyance got involved.)

I just did a Google search to see if this ever showed up on Fandom Wank. Turns out it was on an equivalent site specifically for bronies. If you really want to know: http://bronydramarecorded.tumblr.com/post/42045621118/the-conversion-bureau

Fallout Equestria seems to be the most popular multi-author setting, so I'm a little afraid people will think I'm bagging on it when I say that most multi-author settings in this fandom are creepy. I actually think it's one of the okay ones, for the most part. I haven't read anything in Chess Game of the Gods, so I'm not bagging on it, either, and while I don't like the Lunaverse, I don't think "creepy" is the right word for it. I'm thinking more of stuff like Ponyfall (wasn't supposed to be creepy, but attracted some really creepy authors) and Friendship is Optimal (was intentionally creepy, but attracted authors who missed the point) and Five Score Divided by Four (teetered on the edge of creepy; you can argue when and whether it toppled . . .)

Come to think of it, maybe multi-author settings are only creepy when they involve humans turning into ponies or vice versa.

I fully agree with you, OP. Few things disgusts me more than misanthropy and I will automatically hold anyone to admits to being a misanthrope with utter contempt. So there's no way in hell that I'd ever want to read anything they make.

Not to mention fucking Chatoyance. I don't care if she writes the next best-seller, there's no way in hell that she can write anything that won't disgust me considering how loathesome her mindset is.

This seems like such a silly thing to be upset or offended by.

So the humans can choose to become ponies or die.

okay....? And?? What's the big deal that people are so up in arms about? I swear my dash and all have had so many people condemning it and screeching about it but I don't see what's so bad about it.

I guess I just fall in the category of "who the fuck cares, let them write it why would you even care so much."

In general, I react poorly to people railing on and on about how a particular group of people is horrible and evil. Even when they're talking about a group I agree is evil (say, human traffickers), their ranting tends to get boring and repetitive.

When the rant is directed to humanity as a whole, saying that all humans are horrible and evil, I'm both baffled and infuriated. Misanthropes are presumably human, but they never seem to include themselves in their condemnation, and it seems incredibly arrogant to set yourself up as morally superior to, quite literally, everyone else. I suppose it's possible to write a Conversion Bureau fic that doesn't question the tropes the setting uses and yet isn't misanthropic, but that's not something I've seen--either they somehow question what's been written by Chatoyance and others, or they take it as an article of faith that humans are inherently evil and must be purified.

it seems like the writers of the fanfics have a great hatred of human beings

(i read the tumblr post above, ftr, i haven't read the fics nor do i plan to)

like, they make the pony characters almost word for word say "ponies are awesome and superior and who would want to be a mean icky human"

and the humans in the fic either a) want to be a pony and so they are good, or b) want to kill all ponies and are awful

and apparently the original author is like this in all their stories/real life views, or something?
