[Eona: The Last Dragoneye]

Secret 10 - Eona: The Last Dragoneye, The Necklace of the Gods (fantasy book) by Allison Goodman

[Picture is an image from the book "Eona: The Last Dragoneye" or "Eona" or "The Necklace of the Gods" by the author Alison Goodman. It shows a woman wearing a red sleeveless shirt and red pants and carrying two swords making a pose. There is a faded dragon in the background.]

There are so many things about this book that are gross and wrong and just plain stupid... which is why I feel ashamed for enjoying it so much. I'm still halfway in denial about the fact that I kind of ship her with Ido. (And by "kind of" I mean "absolutely".) I can't even count the number of ways that is terrible and fucked up. (I could probably count the ways but please don't make me it would hurt..)

I've never heard of this book... the description doesn't make anything stand out as weird?

I wonder if it's the whole "girl pretending to be boy to do fantasy stuff because 'no women allowed'" aspect of the premise? idk, but it does sound kinda interesting so I'm gonna check out the books

Why is it gross?

I've seen this book and was once interested in it in passing at the bookstore, but now...?

You can still enjoy things even if you know they're problematic.

As for how it is gross, I'm not OP, but I think it might have to do with (spoilers below)

... the world's attitude towards women, trans* people, disabled people. Although I've always felt that these attitudes were portrayed as ridiculous. It is the point of the plot, after all.
Also, worse than that, the sexual assault scenes. (It's not Rape As Drama though, so there's that.)
Mind, I haven't read the second book yet; I've only heard that it's supposed to be very violent.

I haven't read the sequel yet either, so I was hoping someone would have commented on how that specific book is gross/wrong.

I too felt that the attitudes towards women/trans/disabled were portrayed as ridiculous and Eon was the first book where I truly groked why what seemed super obvious to me about the dragon would have seemed unfathomable to Eon due to cultural attitudes.

I found the whole "magically not disabled anymore" thing annoying, even though it commonly happens in fantasy novels with disabled characters. The sexual assault thing made me put down the book for a week because I was just so worried there were going to be more in the future and I couldn't deal with that.
