(frozen comment) F!S Feminist quote of the day

If we value what we've inherited for free - from other women - surely it's right morally and ethically for us to wake up and say, 'I'm a feminist. '
Ms A Lennox

For those who care, I'm sorry about my absence yesterday. Biology made it difficult for me to do anything but take a lot of painkillers and sleep.

I agree that there's nothing wrong morally or ethically with saying that, but I also don't think it's imperative to say that, especially in a time when "feminist" has become such a loaded word for shitty people to a point where I don't think it's really reversible (in the larger sense) in the public eye anymore.

This is certainly a case where words are fine, but actions speak louder.

If your goal is to make me hate the word feminist, then you are achieving that goal.

I kind of agree, but kind of not?

I don't know, I would call myself a feminist so this doesn't apply to me. But I think if there were a time when the feminist movement went totally off the rails for whatever reason, this wouldn't be enough justification to keep calling yourself a feminist. In other words, I agree with the outcome, and I agree with the sentiment, but I don't agree with the reasoning in general.

Whether or not you call yourself a feminist has to have something to do with the practical realities of what 'feminist' means in the world today, not just with the historical legacy of feminism. It, in my mind, has to be related to the practical question of what we should do in our current situation and in the future, with a definite course of action, not just with historical appreciation for the legacy of the past. Ultimately if you don't agree with feminism as an actually-existing entity, for whatever reason, I don't think you should call yourself a feminist and you're certainly not obligated to.

...You know, I was giving you the benefit of the doubt, but seeing as you've consistently ignored the very basic advise of "Put some freaking context to your quotes for a discussion" I'm calling troll.

If we value "what we've inherited for free from other women"---and nice job there assuming that all women in the world today have done nothing for their sex's advancement except sit on their asses and graciously accept the results of others' hard work on a plate---then the correct response is to carry on the task of promoting equality between the sexes, without making a huge whiny angry deal about whether we identify as feminists or not.

If we value the right for women to make their own free choice as to what label they are willing to stick on their head or not, as feminism says that it does, than surely it's right morally and ethically to allow other women to call themselves whatever the hell they WANT to call themselves and not try to be the Identity Police who mandate that everyone must title and identify themselves the same way or else they must answer in the Court of Feminism to the charge of Internal Misogyny (tm).

If we claim that no one makes a huge aggressive deal about how "If you believe in equality, then you ARE a feminist whether you agree or want to be one or not!" or "If you don't identify as feminist, you hate women and are against equality, even if you actively work towards equality, because the most important thing is that EVERYONE should be a feminist, and anyone who won't label themselves thus is AGAINST WOMEN!", then we are lying through our teeth and deserve a verbal smackdown to be laid upon us, especially if we deny that this happens and then IMMEDIATELY launch into doing it ourselves. (Not that this happened to me multiple times or anything.)
