Yeah, my mom has a master's in education too. She's also very, very tinfoil hat.

Religion makes people dumber.

Eh, not really. It just effects certain people that way.

Well, no argument there. It's just that "certain people" is to me a much larger percentage.

I can't quite agree there - but I've also been on the otherside of the fence and met a lot atheist who've spewed the crap the Duck Dynasty guy does [or, in particularly *lovely* memory, kicked someone out for being homosexual].

Stupid is as stupid does, regardless of religion [or the lack thereof.]

Yeah, but I never said atheism made anyone any smarter, either. My point was that religion, due to an established dogma built on historical inequalities that have only compounded one another over the years with different variations per region (such as the concept of marrying young girls) and the maintenance thereof, operating on the human psychological pattern of adhering to religious tenets on a doctrinal basis because that's what they're comfortable with. (Cognitive dissonance is avoided at all costs due to a sort of psychological pain response -- if you touch your hand to a hot pan you'll recoil, and so do many religious people with cognitive dissonance.)

"Can".

"can" make people dumber.

Okay.

Seriously, otherwise you're saying - without exception - everyone who believes in a religion has gotten dumber for it...Even, you know. The people who don't force it on anyone, don't use it to justify their hate or as a reason to take someone else's rights away.

Which ignores a lot of people who don't do those things.
starphotographs: I like him. He kind of looks and acts like one of my characters. (I did not know this when I started liking him!) (Victor (...>:|))

I've also known some really daft/tinhatty people with master's degrees or higher.

Dumb people crop up everywhere, I think. Sometimes, they crop up in grad school.

Well, I wouldn't say religion is the cause though. I'm pretty sure it doesn't say, "Hark, and all women be gold diggers when they reach their twentieth year. And so God spoketh to them and said, "Bitches be trippin', marry those girls when they're ripe for tha' pickin" in the bible. /I'm an Atheist, so, no dog in this fight.

No, but religion is a major tool of historical institutional inequality and views like that often have a basis (or an excuse) in religion.

It might not, but it's not wholly unconnected with Duck Dynasty guy's mindset about social issues in general, either. Plenty of Christian sects use the Bible as justification for why women should be subservient to men. It's not a coincidence that Christian fundamentalism and feminism tends not to go hand in hand.
