It seems like 25+ marriage as the norm is a really recent development, all things considered. My dad's parents were similarly aged when they started a family (in the late 50s), and it doesn't seem like it was considered scandalous or particularly odd or anything at the time.

It wasn't. We're talking a time when it wasn't unusual for people to have a job (and not just flipping burgers but a real, job-for-life job with benefits and pension) a house and at least one kid by the time they're 25. It's less common now because people generally don't have the financial stability or time to do that until their 30s.

tangent:

There was actually at least one period in... I don't remember, late medieval/early modern England when marriage age jumped up to 25-30, because the couple waited until they accumulated the resources to start a life together. So, it's not a strict upward climb.

It was similar in the early 20th century, too. Averaged age at first marriage in the US reached an all-time low for the 20th century around 1960, while marriage rates reached an all-time high at the same time. The falling marriage rates and greater delay of first marriages we've seen since is a return to normalcy, not the major societal problem some people make it out to be.
