Scary Closing Logos

[personal profile] starphotographs 2014-01-02 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
A few years ago, my boyfriend and I had a conversation about how the Viacom logo freaked us out as kids. Later, I found out that other people were also scared of the Viacom logo... But it was a different one. Everyone talks about the "V of Doom," but that one is actually pretty tame. The shiny zig-zaggy one from the 90s with the booming "VIACOM" voice was pure terror. That aside, I was interested to find that a lot of people were scared of various closing logos as kids. When so many people are scared by something so innocuous, it makes you wonder what, if anything, is behind it. Is it the combination of unfamiliar words/phrases and that weird fucking music all of them seemed to have? WTF is so scary about a bunch of sounds and shapes?

Honestly, I thought closing logos in general were kind of ominous, but only if they were made in a certain era (mid 80s-mid 90s). There was a particular sinister feel to them.

tl;dr, what logos haunt your nightmares? Did the New World Television logo with the shiny mercury ocean weird you out a little? Did you think the Random House sounded like a bad, scary place? (I sure did.)

This can help you out if you want to find something:

....What. No. No, nothing like this ever happened to me or anyone I know and I can only assume you were the most sheltered child in the universe if logos managed to scare you.

I know, it sounds nuts! But it's apparently common.

And I'm not talking full-on run-for-your-life fear. I guess "uneasy" would be a better word for it.

Shut up, asshole. It's a known phenomenon for people who grew up between the 60s and the 90s because of the use of strange voices, odd imagery and sometimes markedly sub-par animation. Maybe you can be all "edgy" and whatever and nothing scared you ever because holy shit you were so ADULT when you were a kid, but there was no need for you to shit all over this post and you should punch yourself in the face.

Huh. I had no idea this would be a thing. Can't say that there's ever been a logo that haunted my nightmares or frightened me. Ones I dislike, sure, but none that scared me.

I had no idea, either! But the entries on the wiki I linked actually have the "scare factor" or each logo listed, so it seems like it's a pretty well-known phenomenon.

Ignore the jackass anon. All this shows is that you have a good imagination. :)

I can't think of any closing logos that scared me, but I can think of some that gave me warm fuzzies, like the "shh!" Lady and piano riff for Gracie Films that always played at the end of The Simpsons.

Ooh, I love that one! There are a lot that do that for me, too. And when they're used at the beginning of a movie, there's this feeling of excitement/adventure that also kind of feels like a good nervousness... It's hard to describe. But it's definitely a Pavlovian thing. My brain learned at an early age that logos = gonna see a cool story. :)

Hell, even the ones that weirded me out could be kind of neat.

The old Unsolved Mysterious intro scared the hell out of me as a kid. That harsh music at the end with the flying bars? Jeeze.

Because shit, that's sinister 80s cheapness at its best. I can see why it wigged you out!

The one for that old show A Current Affair really did it for me.

OMG that opening scared me. Then I would watch the show and have nightmares.

I definitely remember being freaked out by a few of them, but I can't for the life of me remember what they were. I think it's because they tend to be so... abrupt, I guess? Especially the ones that are just some random loud noise.

Not a logo but I couldn't play the Spiderman Gameboy game because the music freaked me out so much.

....huh. No, i can't say any closing logo - or opening logo - of any kind has ever made me feel anything but impatience for the show to start. Or, in the case of, um...that one...with the horse, i really liked it, because pretty horse!! (The white horse that runs and then jumps over a fence. No clue.)

Mostly i ignored them, or was interested in how, lately, they sometimes tweak them to 'match' the movie that's coming on.

(The little plane flying around the Earth always made me feel a little lonely, but it was still cool....)

Not scary, butttttt for the longest time as a kid I thought the Disney logo was Gisney, and the D was a backwards G.

Re: Scary Closing Logos

(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Try saying Gisney with a soft G sound

actually, I know exactly what you mean! I used to watch Iron Chef as a kid and the ending logo (I think it was actually the Fuji TV logo) kind of freaked me out. I always had to leave the room as soon as possible because it didn't really SCARE me but it made me kind of nervous.

That Viacom one (with the booming, imposing voice) scared me. Also, I really didn't like the THX ramp up music.

the little kid's voice saying "deeeeeeeek" at the end of DIC shows is pretty creepy IMHO
