fandom has warped my mind

(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
A friend just posted a status update on Facebook: "Here comes that friggin knot, Lord give me strength!"

...I laughed and laughed and laughed at the awful places my brain went as soon as I read this. Particularly funny since it came from such a straight-laced former school teacher.

What ways has fandom warped your mind?

"nook"

"bucket"

"quadrant"

I can't stop describing my non-homestuck ships as pale/black/red/ashen.

I don't have trouble with bucket or quadrant -- too common in general, I guess -- but boy, does Barnes and Noble advertising make me giggle uncomfortably.

I sometimes forget that most non-fandom people have never heard of My Immortal or Thirty Hs or Celebrian or any of the other Infamous Badfics That Everyone in Fandom Has Read, and therefore would not get any jokes or references I made about them.

(Uh, not that I would ever reference Celebrian in polite company... I was just using it as an example of an Infamous Badfic.)

Oh no, that part I get. I don't get the normal meaning it's supposed to have.

Maybe they are a sailor in a knot-tying competition? Or knitting or something. Or brushing their hair/wig.

I thought it meant knotting fic, tbh. I am confused as well. Maybe they have knotted shoe laces? It's a metaphor for life?

Me too.

Maybe they tried to tie sometime to their truck and it failed.

They could be boating knot masters and they're getting prepared for a knot off.

Now all I can think about are pole-sitters.

I was thinking of those lumberjack people who climb really tall poles using rope and then dance on them.

I'm just going to say that Catholic priests and male aliens doing the diddly-doo no longer raises my squick.

I wanna write them doing it instead.

I sometimes forget that the term and concept of "shipping" isn't really a thing IRL -- people will "root" for a couple to get together, or for one couple to get together over another, but it's not called shipping and it's not done the way shipping is done in fandom.

Whaaaaaat? What is the...innocent meaning of that? I'm seriously baffled.

In the past couple of months friends have talked about fisting in entirely innocent contexts (one was when we were kneading some bread, another used it instead of punching because she couldn't remember the word, as in 'I'm going to fist you' which made it that much worse) and I completely cracked up laughing both times. Alas, awkward explanation ensued.
