(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)A strong character needs emotions, development, goals, and agency. Amy Pond, while played delightfully by Karen Gillan, and given plenty of clever one-liners and brilliant moments, is repeatedly denied character development, has her emotional response to major life events glossed over, is never shown forming or pursuing goals (although she clearly has a career, or a series of careers, off camera), and her agency is repeatedly taken from her by the narrative.
Rose, Martha, and Donna are all given a chance not just to display cleverness and deliver sassy lines, but also to change and grow.
