At the same time a Lesbian meeting the right guy and becoming straight isn't a new storyline in any way what so ever.

unless i missed something major, where in the show did it ever say or even imply that she became straight? because i have a very distinct recollection of a conversation where watson said "i'm not gay" and irene responded with "and i am," the implication there being that they both had feelings for sherlock against their own usual sexual orientation.

That situation might still be frustrating for some people because a lot of lesbians are told "you just haven't met the right guy yet!". So having the show actually have Irene meet a guy she's sexually attracted to might be seen as validating that "meet the right guy" statement. Even if meeting a single guy you're attracted to doesn't actually invalidate all the women you're attracted to.
