I don't know, as a bisexual woman myself I found it nice to see a show acknowledge the fact that sexuality can indeed be fluid and that people don't always fit into nice, neat little boxes.

Maybe it's because I've known several people who were straight/gay but had one or possibly two exceptions to that. They still identified as straight/gay and weren't attracted to any other people of that gender outside of the one, but there was definite sexual attraction there.

You'd think as a bisexual woman you'd want those people to identify as they really are, i.e.; bisexual themselves.

Wow, who made you the definer of personal opinions? Other nonnie has an opinion that doesn't mesh with yours. Get over it and stop trying to project yourself onto others.

(Because we're not you!)

I dunno, I would feel a little disingenuous identifying myself as bi if there was only one person of the same sex I was ever interested in.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
It only takes one to be bi - you never know when you'll meet another one.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
what if you don't, though?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
With that logic, everyone would have to label themselves as bi because if you're gay/lesbian, you never know if or when you'll meet a person of the opposite sex that'll make you bi, if you're straight, you never know if or when you'll meet a person of the same sex that'll make you bi and if you're asexual, you never know if or when you'll meet a person any sex that'll make you want to have sex and thereby, make you bi.

Except they weren't bisexual. They were straight or gay with a single exception. I don't want them to identify as something that they aren't, because that doesn't do anyone any favors at all.

Sexual orientation is described as a spectrum for a reason - because most people don't fit exactly into a box.

At the same time a Lesbian meeting the right guy and becoming straight isn't a new storyline in any way what so ever.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
unless i missed something major, where in the show did it ever say or even imply that she became straight? because i have a very distinct recollection of a conversation where watson said "i'm not gay" and irene responded with "and i am," the implication there being that they both had feelings for sherlock against their own usual sexual orientation.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
That situation might still be frustrating for some people because a lot of lesbians are told "you just haven't met the right guy yet!". So having the show actually have Irene meet a guy she's sexually attracted to might be seen as validating that "meet the right guy" statement. Even if meeting a single guy you're attracted to doesn't actually invalidate all the women you're attracted to.

It'd be nice if it was shown with a straight person falling in love with someone of the same gender for once, instead of falling into the trope of 'lesbian just needs to ~find the right man~'.
