(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)(Maybe that's all because I've always kind of preferred softer SF over hard SF, though)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 04:13 am (UTC)(link)What it really boils down to is old-fashioned sexism. A lot of the old school SF readers (and writers) are predominantly white and male. A lot of the new "soft" SF/fantasy writers and readers are female. The old school group is upset at what they see as an invasion of women spreading girl cooties all over their precious, precious hard SF and react accordingly. It's pathetic, but you can't convince them they're doing anything but protecting all that is holy and sacred about SF from The Enemy.
I just ignore them and read whatever I want.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 07:16 am (UTC)(link)I agree. But I think it's a case of the old school angry white male writers who are overlooking the contributions women have made --and are still making!-- to SF writing, fandom and culture. I'm definitely not arguing that SF was all male back in the day, just that the people complaining about the evolution of SF are.
Either way, those guys are assholes and don't deserve to have their opinions taken to heart by anyone with sense.
