Do you mean movies? Because there's still SF floating around, it's not dead. But yeah, there haven't been as many SF movies lately. Though some friends who had no clue about Ender's Game went to see the movie and said it was the best straight up SciFi movie they've seen in awhile. (Disclaimer: I have no seen the movie so can't say if they are full of lies and delusions.)

It was a pretty good movie, and pretty good for a book adaptation imho (though it has been a while since I've read the book).

You are friends with homophobes? Why the hell have you not ditched those guys? Homophobic yourself perhaps?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
This comment is really strange combined with the fact you are screaming about SJWs in another thread.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
They're a troll. Do not look for or expect consistency. You will only hurt your brain, and they will win.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ahhh. Suddenly it all makes sense.

I'm a complicated person, full of contradictions and likings for one cause and dislikes of other similar causes. Those inherent contradictions make me a pretty normal human being, but because of those I'd be a lousy hard SF character. I can see OSC's homophobia loud and clear mainly, I can't see what the SJWs beef with Moffat is. They have some pretty twisted logic to get to their conclusions.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
...I can't see the SJWs beef about Moffat, either. If anything concentrate on the painfully obvious fact the man can't plot his way out of a paper bag.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I see you missed the part where they LITERALLY JUST SAID their friends went into Ender's Game without knowing anything about it

and incidentally, Orson Scott Card's a homophobic dickhole but that doesn't make it not a great book.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, it does color ones view of it and even sadder later books show signs of Cards way of "thinking".

Once you realize that "buggers" is slang for homosexuals then it starts to make a lot of sense regarding OSC's worldview. He isn't the first author to use obscure slang to get the identity of his real targets under the radar.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Have you read the book? P sure that's not the ending he'd have written if he had actually meant homosexuals.

Its a shit book even without knowing that the author is a dickhead. All it is is a manifesto for maladjusted nerds to "prove" to others that they really are supposed to be better than everyone around them.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
How do you figure they're homophobes? Based on one singular movie they enjoyed? Seems like flimsy reasoning.

They put money into the pocket of a homophobe who publicly stated he'd be using that money for homophobic causes (and also propogated a lie saying that he wouldn't be getting any further monies from that movie despite having a producer's credit and planning on using the movie to sell more of his works to the movie industry) and enjoyed a homophobes work. There really isn't any gray there, its pretty black and white. Everyone who went to see that movie was a homophobe, the only difference is some of them admitted it and some of them tried to weasel out of the charge.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, you're one of those people.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
The more thye talk, the more there WHAAA SJWS thing in the doctor who thread makes even less sense.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
They're a troooolllll and they are getting so very fattened up in this thread. :|

On the artistic side of things: I forget the names, but aren't there a couple of poets from the '30s who're still read and enjoyed despite having openly supported Adolf Hitler? Granted, buying their books doesn't mean funding Neo-Nazis, so let me switch tacks to deal with that.

On the moral side of things: there's a decent chance you're typing on a computer made with minerals that financed the Second Congo War. I wouldn't accuse someone of being a warmonger for not tracking where the minerals came from.

Ezra Pound is the poet you're thinking of.

Card's homophobia isn't as well know as you'd think. A *lot* of people are unaware of his grossness.

I wonder if movies, too - the lack of *good* sci fi movies/tv out there is really sad.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Elysium came out this last year too? I almost thought the picture used in the secret was a screenshot from the movie because the imagery is so similar. I didn't like it as much as District 9 but it wasn't bad.

And I don't know when/if it's coming out in the States, but I'm putting in a good word for Joon-ho Bong's Snowpiercer, which is a lot like Elysium but better.
