Re: Overdone movie plots/ tropes that annoy you

Woman is the hero of this story. She's not actually good at any of the basic things we've emphasized as important in this movie* or if she is she isn't as good as her love interest. Haha, a woman can't be better than a man at something if they're in a relationship. Who would want that? Also, the love interest is just the love interest. He's not the hero. Promise! It's not like he's the only one moving the story along and saving the woman. Hahaha, that would be silly. She's the hero! TRUST ME. Yaaayyy, that day was totally saved by her and only her. Hahaha, that was fun, wasn't it?

*(Sword fighting, mind games, her job, communicating, etc.)

I'm definitely being reminded of The Mortal Instruments trilogy right now. And yes I'm embarrassed to say I read it. >_>

I haven't read it but now I'm very glad I haven't.

This one riles me up very badly.

It riles me up to because I'm usually halfway into a book before it starts to become really clear that the main female lead isn't really a lead at all. Like damn, way to invest all that time for nothing.

Yeah, that true. You don't expect her to be very powerful at the beginning. No hero starts out great. But there comes a point where she should be jumping to the call, passing the tests, earning a name... and she doesn't. Or at least, she doesn't by any work of her own. She has to rely upon the kindness of strangers.

Fuck everything about those tropes. Everything. They've just about ruined female protagonists for me.

It makes trying to find real female protagonists difficult. I will admit. You never know if you're gonna get the real deal or another fake-out.

On the other hand, you also see the other extreme a lot: Male main character, enter female character who, for some, or often, no reason is better and more perfect at everything the main character does, plus being incredibly pretty, witty, and overall too perfect to be true. There is a way to write strong female characters without them having to be the best and prettiest at everything all the time.

And of course then there are those plots that have a mix of both of these tropes: After they spent a lot of time portraying the female character as this overly perfect creature, she suddenly sucks because love subplot. OTL

I have never actually seen that trope without it being paired with the second one.
