Overdone movie plots/ tropes that annoy you

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
One of the most overdone plots in action movies imo: Badass main character in an illegal job (Killer or thief are the most popular choices) falls in love and tries for redemption. I'd really love a movie like that without those awkward love stories. There are tons of it. In fact, I think I never watched a movie with a main character like that without that plot...
And that's not just a Hollywood thing - I have lost count of movies with this exact same plot from all parts of Asia - only that those usually have the girl dying halfway through and the hero going on a rampage that kills him as well in the end...

What plots and tropes do you think are done to death?

I think love triangles are better if they get a bit bloody.

I really want more love triangles in end in threesomes.

I don't always mind them, but I do hate when the sweet nice girl next door steals the "mean girl's" boyfriend, but it's okay because she's the sweet nice girl door. (So Veronica Lodge and Betty Cooper.) Um... nope. Sorry. I still feel at least a little sorry for the "bitch/mean girl" (depending on rating and target age group) in that case. I'm also sick of the guy getting away with being the center of the triangle.

I haaaaate it was the whole "it was all a dream" trope.

It's such an easy cop out to explain any inconsistencies and usually doesn't have any effect on the real setting beyond "oh lol what a weird dream."

The "miscommunication causes people to reject The Hero and they leave and get all mopey only for them to return and save the day" plot.

Alternate universes. If it's not in a comic book, I don't want to see it. Time travel can fuck right off too.

Guy meets girl.

Is like, "Aw yes I am going to prove my manliness by having SEX with that woman."

He does so and then hi-fives his bros.

But woman thought it was REAL LOVE how could he.

What is this? Could he be having feelings?

Guy tells woman how vulnerable she has made him and all is forgiven, he wins!

- This isn't even just movies, but I'm so tired of the guy dumping the girl to be noble, when really all he's doing is making a choice for her. It's not romantic to me (except in some cases) it's pigheaded and stupid.

- The lack of female "buddy" films. Bridesmaids doesn't count - it wasn't a horrible movie, but the "best bud" in the film was the worst "best friend" ever, and... I just want one movie where a group of women bond over something other than having had to wear 27 dresses.

Woman is the hero of this story. She's not actually good at any of the basic things we've emphasized as important in this movie* or if she is she isn't as good as her love interest. Haha, a woman can't be better than a man at something if they're in a relationship. Who would want that? Also, the love interest is just the love interest. He's not the hero. Promise! It's not like he's the only one moving the story along and saving the woman. Hahaha, that would be silly. She's the hero! TRUST ME. Yaaayyy, that day was totally saved by her and only her. Hahaha, that was fun, wasn't it?

*(Sword fighting, mind games, her job, communicating, etc.)

The two main leads hate each other at the start of the movie but at the end, they are in love and macking all over the place.

I blame Shakespeare for starting this whole trope with Much Ado about Nothing. Yeah, Will, I am side eyeing you.

Humans fucked up and destroyed life on Earth, usually by either nuclear war or a spectacular scientific breakthrough suddenly going horribly wrong. Enter aliens who want Earth for themselves. No one else is using it right? Wrong! A ragtag bunch of like, five human survivors left ever must fight against the entire alien civilization for their planet!

Extra twist that's also old: the "aliens" turn out to be once-human mutations caused by the disaster that destroyed Earth.

Supernatural horror where it turns out that nothing weird or even halfway interesting happened at all and the person is just crazy. So, so boring and tired. Also anything where a city person is forced to go to the country for some reason and realizes that their life in the city is totally fake and stupid and full of horrible people, and only country life and country people are "real." I was stuck in an extremely rural area for over ten years and still have nightmares about being forced to go back, lol. It's great if it suits you, but it's really not for everyone. Just like city life.

World crisis that happens, but you only see it happening in the USA/Japan. Probably one of the things I kind of liked that didn't necessarily happen in Pacific Rim?

I hate the Humans are Bastards trope so much. I'm not saying humans are perfect, we're not, but I hate it when writers paint all humans as being evil. I'm not really one for misanthropy.

I also hate when a movie/book/whatever, for whatever inane reason, decided that modern technology is terrible and everyone was much better off when life was simple and then proceed to either get rid of it or make it all useless in some way. Every time that gets painted as a legitimately happy ending, I can't help but think how many people would end up dying because of the resulting chaos.

Pretty much any tropes that rely on old, tired essentialized gender roles.
For example: nagging wife/whipped husband, the immature manchild, women with no sense of humour, men don't want to commit but women do, men have uncontrollable sex drives, women are either whores or prudes, the list goes on and on

Any "wacky misunderstanding" that drives the entire plot and requires every single person involved to fail to communicate more sensibly than disoriented barking seals for literally five seconds. I have hated this trope since I was five years old and watching old Flintstones episodes. It was never funny. Never.

Aliens rampage all over, destroying Earth/humans but in the end, one brave human/cute kid/dying old woman/whatever proves how 'different' humans are and how 'special' because 'only humans' in 'all the universe' love sunsets or some tripe, so the aliens go away/become friends/fix everything.

HATE HATE HATE HATE.

OH, and things when all these bad things happen to the protag but the majority of them is the protag's own goddamn fault. Makes it really hard to give a shit when something bad, but not their fault, does happen.

See, Elyssium and American Horror Story: Coven

tl;dr when they're idiots.

That kind of movie where some upstart main character comes in late to the awesome training and is so incredibly gifted that they wipe the floor with everyone else who has been training for years longer than the MC.

This shows up in a bunch of murder mysteries. Innocent character finds dead body, immediately picks up smoking gun/bloody knife and stands next to dead body like an idiot and is believed to be the murderer by the suddenly appearing angry mob/cops.
