Is this for Lent?

I have no idea when that is, but one of my friend's gave up fandom for Lent, which she said was harder than giving up anything else even though she knew it was temporary. In either case, I have nothing to add that would help you. Sorry. Good luck, I guess?

....I think Lent is in February. ?? Whenever Mardi Gras is, there's some kind of connection between the two, though I am fuzzy on what it is. Thank you for the good luck!

Lent is the period before Easter, and the date of Easter changes every year (and is also different for different sects of Christianity for convoluted reasons) - it depends on when the full moon after the spring equinox appears, and so for Roman Catholics and most Protestants it's between March 22 and April 25. Ash Wednesday is the start of Lent and occurs 40 days before Easter not counting Sundays. Mardi Gras (or whatever it's known by in other cultures) is the day before Ash Wednesday and it's traditionally been the day when you throw a really big party and eat all your fatty, delicious food right before you go into 40 days of mourning, reflection, and austerity. Why is there an ancient tradition of throwing a massive, gluttonous party right before the beginning of a time of deep repentance and spiritual reflection? Because this is Catholicism, and that's how Catholicism does things.

Funny, but that's how the Anglicans here do it, too. Only they always do Mardi Gras in February.

Yeah - 6 weeks before Easter is usually going to be in February, so that's how it usually works out.
