I wonder what religious reasons someone would have for quitting fandom?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I can see someone with strict religious standards being uncomfortable with the amount of porn and stuff, although even that's not every pocket. (It's more and more frequent these days, though.) I remember telling a very religious friend about fandom, but I was hesitant to get her entirely involved because I knew she wouldn't even watch PG-13 movies, so how would she take some of the stuff on LJ?

Maybe they have gotten too obsessed with it and consider it a false idol. I know some religious people who take that "no idols" thing very seriously and say anything can be an idol if you spend more time on it than your religion.

Buddhists try to detach themselves from obsessions.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
As the Orthodox Jewish commenter, I know a lot of the very cloistered Jewish community frowns on TV and Movie watching and going online. There's a constant push and pull on that. When I was a kid you couldn't even mention there was a TV in your house without worrying about being shunned, and my sister and all the girls in her 6th-grade class were asked to sign a contract keeping them from seeing movies (which stopped absolutely none of them from seeing Titanic repeatedly). Then another side of the community pushed back and got into how there's nothing in the literature restricting these things and standards relaxed somewhat. It's like a pendulum, swinging from super strict and back.

Depends on the fandom. For example, I could think of a plethora of religious reasons someone might feel obliged to quit, say, Supernatural.

True story: When I was fifteen, I quit The X-Files (including its fandom) because I feared I was starting to love it more than I loved God.

(I started watching again a year or two later. Also, I don't believe in God now.)

Probably a fandom that mentioned evolution once, and the tea party issued a fatwah against it.

Potentially the fandom involves witches or the supernatural?

I know I was nervous when I got into fandoms that involved the supernatural when I was little because of people who would be all, "Isn't that against your religion?"

But yeah, a big thing might be the porn stuff, like the other anon said

Orthodox Judaism, by any chance? Because I have been down that road and let me tell you: what your rabbi/community feels is proper can always have a counterargument. ALWAYS. In fact, not arguing against certain restrictions is not good Jewiness. We are the people who literally fought with God.

Anyhoo, if this is the case, just don't gp online on Shabbos. Otherwise fandom is your own business and not unkosher that I can tell.

Secret 5 - Fandom, religion

[Picture is a black hole in outer space? It is colored an orange-y yellow, and there is red around it.]

My conscience says I should quit fandom for religious reasons. But Fandom Secrets, I can't quit you!!! Have a pic of the black hole my soul is getting sucked into.

Hmm, OP, I notice you specifically say you can't quite Fandom Secrets, not the rest of the fandom. That actually makes me wonder what your religious reasons are, because to me FS seems one of the more... relatively benign corners of fandom. Heck, most of the time there isn't even anything porny.

Guilt and "shoulds" can be bad reasons for quitting fandom. :)

However, you feel like you're getting sucked into a black hole for a reason. Is the black hole despair? A feeling of being overwhelmed by negatives?

Pay attention to that feeling. Sort these things out. Don't let guilt and fear and "shoulds" control your life, even for religious reasons.

There are real reasons for how we feel and they should be taken seriously. But don't stress and beat yourself up. Evaluate. If your religious beliefs help guide your life, I'd suggest praying and maybe meditating about how you feel and what the next step should be.

In conclusion, be gentle with yourself about this, and try to figure out what to do. Try not to stress.

hugs

As a Muslim, and one who ships, writes and draws, here's my take on this.

Religous life =/= what I am

Internet life =/= what I am

Fandom life =/= what I am

I am not defined by only one part of me. I am defined by what I believe, what I like, what I don't like, and my life experiences. All of them.

I have to admit, it took me a while to find an equilibrium. I hope you can sort out your beliefs as well as I did. :)

P.S: keep a wall between fandom and real life; combining both will bring your mind down hard.

Is this for Lent?

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-01-03 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea when that is, but one of my friend's gave up fandom for Lent, which she said was harder than giving up anything else even though she knew it was temporary. In either case, I have nothing to add that would help you. Sorry. Good luck, I guess?

Good luck; I hope you can sort things out! As you work through this, remember that the common factor in the equation is you. It's about reconciling your relationship with fandom and your relationship with your religion, not what others think those relationships are or should be. And anyway, they can't be that incompatible, or you wouldn't be here in the first place.

You mentioned in some of your comments that you're a Christian, and you also mentioned that your leadership at the moment is rather iffy. It could be worth studying Bible scholarship--not just the Bible itself, but the various texts written about it. Try to find authors from multiple denominations and a variety of viewpoints, and look for a more personal understanding of what the Bible says.

If your religion is one that doesn't have room for itself AND the things you love - and I reckon if fandom is already a problem then a a hell of a lot more important things will also be - it's not one worth following. Sorry.
