You mentioned in some of your comments that you're a Christian, and you also mentioned that your leadership at the moment is rather iffy. It could be worth studying Bible scholarship--not just the Bible itself, but the various texts written about it. Try to find authors from multiple denominations and a variety of viewpoints, and look for a more personal understanding of what the Bible says.

Oh, I do a lot of outside reading, believe me, stuff that is not, and will never, be on the (American) "approved" reading list....They also have a lot less bite than they used to, so there's nothing they can really do about it, when their members read (non-NAE) stuff they don't approve of.

They used to encourage and promote a personal understanding of what the Bible says. Now they don't. :-(
