OP here.

DW ate my comment?? Anyway.

This is basically what I am asking myself RN, yeah. Not that my church was ever against SF (kind of the opposite, though fantasy was always considered a bit sketch), but that ended up not being a good thing, because reading SF led a lot of people (including me) down some not so good paths, after some stuff happened (sorry I can't be specific). Now, in the present, they are anti-books in general, but thankfully nobody listens to the people at the top anymore. :-P

I don't read fanfic though, and my only fandom participation is here. So. IDK....

anti-books in general

I'm sorry. I try to be respectful of people's beliefs, but this is really scary to me.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
OP here

...does it help if I tell you that all of us generally mock these "leaders" for how nonsensical they are, and what ridiculous things they say? They decided to join up with the book-burning/funeral-picketing people in the States, but the rest of us elsewhere in the world still carry on as if they've never made a dent, though there was a lot of trouble, when it first happened, a lot of families were destroyed, and more than a few people turned atheist over it. Or very very bitter.

But, yeah, the anti-book thing (it was a couple of years ago) really made me shake my head. They used to be the exact opposite, until they signed up with the Terry Jones/Fred Phelps crowd.

DA
From just the bare essentials you've shared it actually sounds a bit cult-like, which is not a very good environment and I can see how that would lead to a lot of doubt and introspection.

Either way, I wish you luck on your journey and hope you find the peace between fandom enjoyment and personal belief.

OP here

Yeah they are a lot more sketch than they used to be. Ah well it doesn't really impact my life anyway because they are all very far away from me, geographically AND theologically, so I can basically ignore it all and carry on with my life. :-) Thank you for the well wishes!

because reading SF led a lot of people (including me) down some not so good paths, after some stuff happened (sorry I can't be specific).

...what

Did you start reading too much Star Trek porn?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
OP here

Nooooooo but a lot of ex-members tried to use (non-porn) SF to shore up their extremely vehement atheism. I did too, for a little while. It wasn't a pretty picture. :-(

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Wait... are you saying that atheism is what the "not so good paths" you mentioned a few comments ago was all about? :\

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
I saw your message below that you've gone to bed, so I do hope you see this. I am an atheist and most of us are normal, moral people. There are extremists however, like there are in any group. If people in this church are become extreme and possibly violent, I think that's more a reaction to the strict rules this 'religion' (I'm sorry, just based on what you've told us, I agree with the other anon that it sounds more like a cult). It's not the fault of science fiction books.

>some not so good paths
>atheism

Uh......

Okay, OP, you'll probably not want to hear this, but atheism isn't a "bad path." I mean, I understand if you still want the community and belonging that comes with being part of your semi-cult (been there) but a more objective and logical view of the world isn't a bad thing.

I would, however, recommend you read some actual atheist literature instead of Fanfic in order to further analyze if you agree with atheist tenants.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
What, renters who don't believe in god or something?
Don't you mean tenets?

Huh? Oh, yeah, typo. Well spotted.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
Atheist tenants as opposed to what?- atheist landlords!?

Then the question becomes: you say "religious reasons", but what are those reasons, exactly?

Is there something in fandom you cannot abide by the rules of your faith? Is it the potential for 'false idols'? Is it Lent? Is it that fandom is influential on your introspection and you want to re-evaluate yourself without that influence? Are you just looking to spend more time on your faith and cutting down on fandom as a step towards that goal?
