Orthodox Judaism, by any chance? Because I have been down that road and let me tell you: what your rabbi/community feels is proper can always have a counterargument. ALWAYS. In fact, not arguing against certain restrictions is not good Jewiness. We are the people who literally fought with God.

Anyhoo, if this is the case, just don't gp online on Shabbos. Otherwise fandom is your own business and not unkosher that I can tell.

If they are talking about Orthodox Judaism, I wouldn't be so quick to say that it's "just the rabbi/community". Judaism is a religion of personal responsibility. If they're truly feeling that there's something wrong, I think they should try to wrangle out what they feel is wrong and why, and come to a decision about it.

And tbh there are issues with fandom and Judaism. I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it, if the OP is feeling a conflict. I think it needs to be solved, not handwaved away.

I am Orthodox myself, and I set specific boundaries of things I Will Not Do that I feel trespass too far. I will admit that sometimes I think I should be stricter with myself, though.

OP here

Not Orthodox Judaism, neither am I "Orthodox Christian" though that's what my church calls itself now (long story). I feel exactly as you've described above, though, and I completely get that push-pull of wanting to do better, but the spirit is willing, the flesh is weak....

My faith has been a bit lacking in the last couple of months (I've been ill--that's not an excuse), so that's why I made the secret. I wonder if this (my participation here) might not be eating into time that could be spent in a more edifying way, and that might resolve my current issues? IDK. Though I have had some pretty good conversations here, too.

You're right, it can't just be handwaved away, though. Thanks for your support.

(saw your goodnight post, but if you see this later-)
ayrt

I'm glad it helped! I think that /wanting/ to reconsider this time spent is a good start, for sure. And fandom life can conflict with many things - job, family, school, etc., including religion. So I think that you should try to do some thinking with yourself and see what your soul says. Either way, good luck, and be strong! :)
You'll enjoy fandom more anyway if you can do it with a clear conscience.

Wait, I didn't think ROCOR was picketing funerals. Yet.
