I don't mind if actors/writers/whatever are ambivalent or even express dislike for fic/art about them (or characters in regard to art). Because I would be freaked out if someone showed me fics/art of me fucking my best friend (or art of a character who looks exactly like me).

And I can understand why they would think all art/fic is like that because (as with most things), the worst aspects are what is seen.

I don't know, I can understand being freaked out about art/fic featuring you, particularly the smutty kind, but to then mock and belittle the artists? Not cool. I think there's a way to dislike something personally while still supporting the idea or at the least not mocking or belittling like so many anti-fic/art people do.

But most of the actors/writers are not doing that. They are shown this stuff in interviews out of nowhere and have to respond. It is usually the interviewers being nasty and actors/writers following whatever mood there is.

I agree that it can make for an awkward interview, but his reaction could have been a little more respectful. It might not make him an asshole, but it certainly doesn't look good. Compare his reaction to Mark Ruffalo's when he's presented with Tony/Steve fanart.

"Yeah! I love it; it's awesome," Ruffalo enthused. "I endorse it 100 percent. You know what it is? It's open-source creativity." And here's a scenario for the fans to contemplate: Ruffalo couldn't wait to drop his newfound knowledge bomb on Downey Jr. "I'm going to call him and tell him, and he's going to laugh his ass off," Ruffalo said. "He'll love that."

No one is in any way obligated to be "respectful," or pleased or even nice when someone shoves a picture of them sexing it up with a coworker in their face. If someone was drawing porn of me and my friend(s), I'd be pissed, especially if they acted like I was supposed to be overwhelmed with joy and excitement and think it was really great. ESPECIALLY if people were constantly pushing it on me and forcing me to deal with it. Ffs, have we learned nothing from the SPN fandom and their antics?

No one is obligated to be respectful. People can say what ever they want to who ever they want. I am not actually angry at him, I just thought he was a classier guy than that. I am not saying he's wrong for having an opinion and expressing it, I didn't expect him to be that blunt.

I don't see how being displeased with peoples' writing and drawing porn of you, and thinking it's stupid and annoying, is un-classy. Sure, he could have been a bit less blunt, and it probably was not the wisest move in terms of attracting a following, but I don't think that people who push their porn of other people into those other peoples' faces really get to complain if the other people say unkind things about it.

There's this weird attitude a lot of people seem to have that "If strangers know your name for any reason, your body and sex life/preferences are public domain and we can do whatever we want with them!" that I find extremely creepy. It's like the Simpsons episode where Homer says "If celebrities didn't want people going through their trash and saying they're gay, they shouldn't have tried to express themselves creatively!" I find the whole thing to be in very bad taste---write or draw what you will, but keep such things out of the sight of the people you're using for inspiration, at least. That's just basic courtesy.

I agree whole heartedly with your last point, I think people should keep things to themselves as much as possible, but not everything can stay buried with the internet being what it is. He had to know something like this was going to come up eventually. Also, I draw the distinction between the spirit of a fictional character and the actor who plays him Spock is a fictional character. Zach is not Spock and I think that when people write fic about Spock, they might be thinking about Zach's portrayal of the character, but not the actor himself.

It's still his face on the fanart, though. Plus he doesn't like the ship to begin with, so expecting him to be all happy-peppy about people trying to make him ship it or be enthusiastic about fanworks revolving around it is asking a bit much imo. And knowing something is possible or likely doesn't mean that you're going to like it when it shows up.

I think the biggest problem really is that people who get superinvested in their ships try and shove them in the faces of the actors who portray the characters in the ship. They're trying to drag those people into their ship, into their fic and art, even when those people really do not want to be involved. There is this difficulty that some fans seem to have in distinguishing between actor and character, and it can lead to some not-so-nice results (look at what the aforementioned SPN fandom has done to their favorite actors in the past.) It's not so much a problem of the internet as it is a problem of some of the FANS and their terrible behavior.

I think you are splitting hairs here. Is it still his face if he has pointy ears, a bowl cut and vulcan eyebrows? I am not expecting him to be happy about it. He doesn't need to ship it or even like it, just not be so vitriolic about it.

I stay away from Supernatural, so I don't get any of the references you are making. But I have been in a fandom where I don't agree with the main ship. Do I attack them and say they are crap no? From what I understand Supernatural has some of the scariest fans in fandom. It is not necessarily fair to compare fans of other shows/movies/books etc to them.

I disagree. I think people should always strive to be respectful, particularly if you are a public figure of any sort. We'll just have to chalk this one up to a philosophical difference.

I don't think that people who treat others with disrespect deserve to be treated with respect for it themselves, and imposing on people to look at your naked fan art of them doing R rated things with their equally naked friends, or listen to your literotica about their character when it's blatantly clear you're imagining THEM while you read it, is NOT RESPECTFUL.

I agree with you, if that makes you feel any better. Plus, no one was showing him any pictures of Vulcan erotica, they were just talking about it in general. Two wrongs don't make a right. If someone is mean to you, that doesn't mean you have the right to be mean right back. Maintaining calm and composed when faced with distress is a sign of a strong character.

A lot of the time it isn't the author or artist showing the actor the work, it's whoever is doing an interview showing it too them - usually without the artist/author's permission.

Agreed, that shit is disgusting. There's nothing "philosophical" about forcing a stranger to participate in your wishful-thinking celebrity fantasy nonsense and the celebrity should be under no obligation whatsoever to be polite. Gross. People act so entitled just because someone is famous.

What some people fail to take into account is that, unlike other actors that are more easy going about slash, ZQ IS a gay man in real life
It's already bad to get constantly told that you can't play straight characters that are in a het relationship only because you're gay but these people (in particular the Pinto - those who ship him with Chris Pine) are using the homosexuality of a real person to validate their shippers.
If someone has to be fucking "respectful" here it's the star trek fans and those he replied to had NOT been respectful, not even a bit.

That could just be down to personality types and how quickly they can respond to just abrupt questions. Because I'd be like, "uuuuhhhhhhh. Uhhhhhhhhhhhh. Is that my friend and I? Uhhhhhhh. Ew." Or it could be affected by how much previous exposure they have had to it.

I've never seen this. I knew there was a reason I loved Ruffalo as Banner.
