And I can understand why they would think all art/fic is like that because (as with most things), the worst aspects are what is seen.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:39 am (UTC)(link)I think I tend to give actors a pass on nasty fic comments, as they're the most likely to get creeped on and creeped out, especially if RPF gets in the picture.
And really, it's silly to judge anyone for saying "there are some really sucky fic authors out there", because there are some really sucky fic authors out there. Naming names is bad form, but acknowledging the existence is just... true.
However, I do find creators' opinions of fanfiction influence my opinions of the creators. They don't have to love it, they don't even have to like it, but throwing tantrums about it or making sweeping judgmental statements about all fanfic everywhere drives down my respect rather markedly.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 01:13 am (UTC)(link)IIRC, she doesn't want it to be posted where young children can find it (because, you know, HP is a kid's book, so there's a way bigger chance of them finding it than of them finding, say, Game of Thrones stuff). I remember an ONTD article a year or two back that totally misrepresented what she said about it for the purpose of the article's argument, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:42 am (UTC)(link)Secret 4 - Actors and authors' reactions to fanworks
I recently realized that I judge people by the way they react to fanart or fanfic. If they are supportive of it or at least act decent about it, I immediately think higher of them and like them more for it. So these three (Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch, J.K. Rowling) for example are A-okay in my book... ...While I immediately lost all respect for Zachary Quinto and thought he was a total douchebag when he made some dumb remarks about fic authors or something.
This is especially weird because I neither draw nor write fanfic and only very occasionally read it. I don't know why my feelings about it are so strong.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:49 am (UTC)(link)The second reason why I am particularly upset is because he actively shipped Mohinder and Sylar in Heroes, going as far to mention possible shipper names. The only reason I can think of is that Star Trek is much much bigger than Heroes and the added pressure of a large franchise makes it harder to accept? I don't know. I don't even ship Kirk/Spock, persay, but I accept its popularity and status among pop culture.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:56 am (UTC)(link)That's definitely obnoxious, but I wouldn't put it in the anti-fanfic category.

In fairness it is actually canon. Fanon is not canon, no matter how hard people wish it to be, and K/S is fanon.
Also, no one is obliged to ship anything they don't want to, and just because someone likes ONE slash ship, that does not mean they must like ALL slash ships, particularly if they are personally involved.

Oh no! Heaven forbid that an actor interpret the script he is given in light of prior performances rather than the script you want him to perform.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)"To say that Kirk and Spock "are just friends" seems mean and pointless."
it's the truth and his only responsibility as an actor is making you buy their friendship, not other things.
I can think about a million of mean words and "friends" is not one of them.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 03:55 am (UTC)(link)I can understand how actors/creators may not want much to do with the smutty side, but I do think it's in their best interest to be at least respectful about it. And I don't at all understand those that are entirely against it (even the non smutty stuff) but I'm also apart of the animation/comics community and tons of professionals get their start drawing fanart and continue to do it into their career. It's just another way to express yourself artistically, I don't see the reason for turning down your nose at it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)He's entitled to think that fanfictions are a loss of time, you know, especially if his only experience with this subculture is those fans who keep asking him if he likes kirk/spock slash even though he had said he wasn't interested already, show him porn fanarts and ask him if he's fucking one of his friends (Pine).
sorry but Quinto - a gay man in real life whose homosexuality is used as a pretext to validate someone's slash ship - gets my sympathy more than a bunch of fangirls whose feelings are hurt because the actors are humans too and they might like or not like their thing.
