The reason is, as it's always been, the fact that they're not making any money by doing it.

I feel like that's short sighted, I've seen fan activity help to keep shows alive, spread interest to others and for some people it's even lead to jobs.

I know money is often the great divider (there are books/shows/movies that are not only derivative of other things but could be called straight up fanfic... the only reason it isn't fanfic is because it has some money behind it) but it still feels silly for creators to discourage fan activity all together when there's ways it could be profitable for them.
