(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 03:55 am (UTC)(link)I can understand how actors/creators may not want much to do with the smutty side, but I do think it's in their best interest to be at least respectful about it. And I don't at all understand those that are entirely against it (even the non smutty stuff) but I'm also apart of the animation/comics community and tons of professionals get their start drawing fanart and continue to do it into their career. It's just another way to express yourself artistically, I don't see the reason for turning down your nose at it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 06:00 am (UTC)(link)I know money is often the great divider (there are books/shows/movies that are not only derivative of other things but could be called straight up fanfic... the only reason it isn't fanfic is because it has some money behind it) but it still feels silly for creators to discourage fan activity all together when there's ways it could be profitable for them.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)They are not obligated to like it, and it's not going to hurt their careers if they don't.
Neither is it a requirement to draw fanart to be a professional. Sure, they may draw it, but that doesn't mean that they take it so seriously to demand respect for it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)I never said anywhere that they have to like it, I just think it's in their best interest to ignore it. I don't draw or write smut so I don't even really have a horse in that race. And I was not just referring to smut but also to general fan activities, because sometimes even the most innocent of fan activities get bashed.
And it's not a *requirement* to draw fanart, but it's very helpful. And to be honest, you can't actually be a professional artist without having the skills to emulate other artists. In the animation and comics world this often means you end up drawing fanart. I never said they take it all that seriously, if it's truly fanart, then it's for fun! But they also don't turn their nose down at it, and that makes a difference.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)As an artist I have always found it best practice to illustrate my own original characters, and I progress the most that way. It depends on the field. For me it's best to not emulate someone else. It's not about my preferences, it's how I am wired. I'm not in it for commercial art, or to be an artist for someone else's works. It's my own stuff that I promote, so emulating someone else's work is pointless for me. And by doing that =/= turning nose up at those who do doodle fanart, which I am very well aware that they have.
