He hates Pinto (which is perfectly great and right for him to do, of course) and he can't stand Kirk/Spock.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
he can't stand Kirk/Spock.

Source?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
google it - he disparaged it at some convention.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Or you could give me a source to back yourself up.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not your librarian, sis.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
"This is true, there's evidence out there, honest!"

You bring your own evidence to a debate. This is a stupid argument on the internet, so if you're too lazy to look up your sources that's fine, but don't try to act morally superior.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
You are a bundle of projection, aren't you? LOL, I don't care whether you agree or not.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
DA Ah, 'projection'. The good ol' attack without any ammunition. And of course you don't care. Of course. Yup.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
If you are using something as evidence to support your argument then it is, in fact, on you to provide the source of that evidence.

Why should I put in effort for YOUR argument?

he never said that he can't it but it's still pretty obvious that he doesn't get the ship and doesn't like the idea and when asked about it he said things like:

"I mean no disrespect for people who either write or read fanfiction. I have absolutely no interest in it; it doesn't interest me. I understand how it interests other people; I respect their desire to be interested in it. I think both Kirk and Spock—and definitely me and Chris—are only good friends. Any suggestion otherwise has more to say about the person making the suggestion than it does about the characters."

he was also shocked by people turning his audiobook of the first movie into a K/S slash.

That's not anti-fanfic, that's anti-particular-pairings.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Honey, he said he has better things to do with his time, and "those people" don't. That's anti fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Then you should have said that in the comment, rather than saying he hates the pairing.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
What difference does it make? He dislikes them both.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
...there's actually a really big difference... I'm not really sure how you can't see that?

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2014-01-04 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, please don't drag the grand old tradition of Trekies down into the pits of tin-hat crazy that characterize other fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
he can't stand Kirk/Spock.

He should've thought of that before hopping on board a franchise that had been full of K/S for the past forty years.

Most people who are not in Star Trek fandom are not aware of K/S, you know. Hell, I've been IN fandoms that had popular slash pairings, and didn't even know that those pairings existed for a long time, or that they were popular, because I wasn't in the areas of fandom that talked about them a lot. People act like EVERYONE knows ALL about the big-name ships, forgetting that most people outside of the section of fandom that ships those ships has literally never heard of them.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
This. And just because he's gay and the biggest ship is Kirk/Spock doesn't mean he has to like it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
This. My friends and I have been into Star Trek for years and we've never heard of K/S.

Also, not all of fandom is into fics or shipping.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, you mean a requirement for him to act in Star Trek is that he be fully accepting of a fanon for a small percentage of fans? Is this in his contract?

[personal profile] diabolicalfiend 2014-01-04 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
No, this is the guy's career. While I disagree with the idea that he couldn't have known about the pairing before he'd signed up, all he needs to think about it 'can he play the character?', 'does it pay enough?' and 'is this a good move for my career?'. He does not have to support fan made material in the slightest.

He should have had more tact and not painted the shippers as losers, but that's about manners, not anything else.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, FFS. Really? He has to cheer on some stupid fantasy that has nothing to do with the actual canon characters and situations? (Hint--both Kirk and Spock are canonically straight.) This is why fanfic has such a bad reputation, because addled "writers" insist their fantasies are just as valid as canon. It's not.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
you make it sound like he accepted to play Romeo but he hates Romeo and Juliet..
except Kirk and Spock, no matter how old, had never been canon. It's a subculture, the majority of the old and new fans don't read slash fanfictions and won't post in shipper communities or partecipate to their conventions.
If he's required to like something that's their friendship which is what the script given to him tells him to play and he seems to do that just fine. But even if he didn't like their friendship he'd be entitled to have an opinion.
