I hate to perpetually harp about tumblr, but the age drama seems worse there than it ever was on LJ. Like not only were ages kept secret/rather vague, of the people who gave ages, I remember 20s and 30s seemed to be a majority (especially when it came to BNFs). Communities like fandomwank didn't even let you register unless you were over 18. Whereas tumblr is super inundated with teens displaying their ages/orientations/you name it left and right and posts about high school and starting college OMIGASH and a bunch of BNFs are now teens (one of the most prolific homestuck artists is 16 I think), and when you're older than that, you can feel a lot, well... older.

Tumblr just seems to be all about drama, period.

Yes, this. I have a sideblog dedicated to one of my favorite characters and most of my followers who are in the fandom are from 14 to 20. Being 25, I can't help but feel old when I see that a 14 year old reblogs the most posts from me. I also feel like they wouldn't want to interact with someone who's a decade older than them if they realized my age. :\

I'm 53 and there is NO FUCKING WAY I will mention my age in a fandom context.

Not because I'm embarrassed about it - I'm not - but because I think there's a likelihood that some fans are just going to say, "God, she's my mother's age!" (or grandmother's) and then every exchange I have will be colored by the assumptions and prejudices they have around that.

Heh, and this is precisely why I do mention my age (I'm 56) ... it's time to toss those assumptions and prejudices.

God THIS. I'm 28 and it freaks me out when I realize that I just mutually followed a 14 year old because they weren't clear about their age. Not that I want to be ageist, but it seems really creepy on my part. I also feel like the 18 year old crowd is generally way more Tumblr savvy then I'll ever be. But on the other hand, I could care less if someone is older than me, so maybe it's not really that big of deal once both parties clear 20.

You really think all of those BNFs were telling the truth about their ages? Because I sure as hell wasn't.

Oh I'm sure there were some BNFs who lied, but all the ones I usually remember off the top of my head (Cassie Claire, Cleolinda, rufftoon, etc) were telling the truth.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
This exactly.

Yeah. I'm 35, and most of the people I follow on tumblr are at least 10, 15 years younger than I am. That realization can get a bit scary.

OTOH, it does explain a few things. Whenever I think "jfc, stop making a mountain out of a molehill, this really isn't a big deal" I try to remember that at that age, yeah, it kind of is.

The age thing can be especially problematic on tumblr if you're rping. I used to have no problem with erotic rping, but I now have a no erotic RP rule unless it's with someone I know very well.

This is part of the reason why I gave up my account...it just got tiring seeing all these school/parents/tweenie friends complaints mixed in with the fandom stuff. The lit/cooking/nature blogs I followed didn't have any of that, because the bloggers were middle-aged, and they stayed on-topic most of the time but the fandom blogs definitely skewed towards younger. Complete with 1stWorldYouthProblems, so.....
