I'm perfectly aware I'm not ancient, and I have no plans to leave fandom on account of age. However, I sometimes feel ancient when I discover a BNF is ten years younger than me.

I would really, really like to see a graph of the age distribution of people active in fandom.

I think people who complain about being 'ancient' in fandom aren't saying they feel guilty because they've reached the deadline for fun, but more because younger people are now in fandom, and it could be harder for them to reach out to each other, or maybe it just makes them feel older due to the age gap with other fandom members.

I agree that it's wrong, although I would also hope that as you get older the nature of your engagement with fandom would change (probably for the better).

But (especially wrt to the 25 is so old thing) people are always going to have complicated feelings about getting older and they probably always have and that's okay. Life is freaky and it's okay to get freaked about it and about things in it, like aging.

It infuriates me when people talk about how pathetic it'd be to still be in fandom when they're "old". That's both arrogant and ignorant. How old is the Sherlock Holmes fandom? Star Wars? Star Trek? You don't stop being interested in things just because you turn 30... or 40, or 50 or 100. Maybe you'll drift away from fandom, but it won't be because you've reached some arbitrary deadline for fun.

Post Script: Please quit moaning about how you're 24 and "soooo ancient" now. You sound ridiculous.

I don't think it's being too old for fandom as much as being out of the age group for the people around you in fandom.

There are certain fandoms where yes, 25 is much older, in a fandom that evolves like kpop.

But otherwise, some fandoms are much older, Wizard of Oz is a good example of one that parents raise their kids watching the movies and all the various events.

I only call myself ancient because I remember a time when smutfics were called lemons, and they were allowed on fanfiction.net, but geocities was where the good stuff was anyway. Also because I see kids going through things that I was going through when they were babies, and that feels weird to me. I am new at this adult stuff. I kind of feel like I should have done more with my life, and it's not as if that's an uncommon thing.

I don't care about being too old for fandom, though. It's just a fun thing. People are allowed to have fun whatever age. I just feel old in general.

I hate to perpetually harp about tumblr, but the age drama seems worse there than it ever was on LJ. Like not only were ages kept secret/rather vague, of the people who gave ages, I remember 20s and 30s seemed to be a majority (especially when it came to BNFs). Communities like fandomwank didn't even let you register unless you were over 18. Whereas tumblr is super inundated with teens displaying their ages/orientations/you name it left and right and posts about high school and starting college OMIGASH and a bunch of BNFs are now teens (one of the most prolific homestuck artists is 16 I think), and when you're older than that, you can feel a lot, well... older.

NGL, I feel incredibly awkward when I find out I've been discussing a ship with a 16 year old. I'd really rather ...not.

Especially in the pokemon fandom, when I'm livestreaming and a more explicit song or tv show starts, I much prefer to keep it to people of appropriate ages. I don't fancy getting in trouble because it turns out pikachufan92 is underage.

All this combines to me feeling quite ancient (when I'm not, really)

I completely 110% agree, but I still find myself feeling awkward and old and a little sad when I join a new fandom and/or find out most of the fans/BNFs I'm talking to are still teenagers (I'm in my 30s).

Dude, older fans are awesome! They've been around for longer and have more perspective. And they tend to be the kind of people who don't lose exuberance as they age, so I totally want to be them when I (never) grow up. :)

You know, when I was a kid and teenager, I thought 25 was younger than a lot of people in my generation are making it out to be. But I don't see the "so ooooold" thing as much as I see people talking about how they're "soooooo grown up" now, and all of the undignified youthful things they can't do anymore. Like wearing t-shirts or beanies and getting drunk. I... Wha? Why are you trying to turn in to a stodgy old fart? :|

I'm older (fifty this year), and most of my fandoms are 'old school' and have fans that skew towards 'mature', but sometimes I find myself mixing in younger groups, and it can be awkward at both ends of the interaction. But I love my fannish activities, so I guess I'll keep on keeping on.

I have to admit that I sometime feel a little awkward when a group of fandom people are chatting and the topic of age comes up, and I find out that everyone else is in their teens while I'm going to be turning 30 this year. I do then feel embarrassed to say my age if I'm asked. However, I truly believe that there's no such thing as too old for fandom. I watch things like Doctor Who and Sherlock with my 56 year old mother, and I sincerely hope that I'll still be in fandom when I'm her age (and older).

Honestly, I'll probably be in fandom until the day I die.

But I am in my 20's and because my main fandoms are a couple of obscure kid's shows, I feel like I'm a creeper when I'm talking to people who are... closer in age to the target demographic. Which is most of them. I know they probably don't care, but I still worry that they'd be squicked to know my age, so I don't like telling anyway.

I can't remember ever being bothered by the thought of older people in fandom when I was younger, I was too busy reading fic and squeeing over characters I liked not much has changed.

I'm in my middle 50s and I have no problem with discussing my fandoms with younger fans (or older, if I can find them *L*) I feel like it keeps me young and happy and more in touch with what is going on in the world because, yes, we wind up not only discussing fandoms but life, political beliefs and many other things.

I will, however, say that I bite my lip when they start whining about being asked to do chores or not being allowed to go to some event that would have been considered borderline risky when I was their age (and is probably even worse now). *L*
