I think people who complain about being 'ancient' in fandom aren't saying they feel guilty because they've reached the deadline for fun, but more because younger people are now in fandom, and it could be harder for them to reach out to each other, or maybe it just makes them feel older due to the age gap with other fandom members.

Happens to everyone. They'll just have to get used to it like the rest of us have. :)

That's pretty much it for me.

Also, it's sort of creepy when you find out 14-year-olds have been reading your pornographic content. Like, I get that they're sexual beings and all, but I don't feel entirely comfortable being a fap source for teens.

It's strange, because I'm always hearing this and I can't bother to find it creepy. I always put warnings on my NC-17 content. Anyone who's reading it, it's because they want to be there.

I mean, yeah, I get why it's kind of wrong or kind of gross for most people, but (personally!) I:

a) Don't have a moral ground to criticize anyone because technically is not like I didn't do it either.
b) What other people do with their nether parts is not my responsability, specially after I warned for it and applied the available filters to the content I put online.

Pretty sure the OP is talking about people who aren't actually very old (say in their mid-20s) but go on and on about how they expect to suddenly grow a life when they're 30 and won't be in fandom anymore because that would be so sad, etc.

I've seen comments like that and just shake my head.

Well alright, but that's not entirely silly. People do tend to get lives in their 20s-30s, so they'd have less time for fandom. And that's completely realistic. I know sometimes I get so caught up with things that I don't visit any fan communities for days, and that's part of growing up.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Sure it is. But it's kind of insulting to assume that fandom = no life/immaturity and to set some totally arbitrary deadline for when you'll "grow out of it". It's even sillier to assume that if you don't quit fandom entirely by that deadline, it'll mean you've stagnated in immaturity forever.

Agreed.

Agree completely.

I think it's strange that you can be a sportsfan your entire life, dress in team jerseys, go to games wearing face makeup, and society at large approves. But heaven forbid you're interested in a movie/book/tv show/etc. Because that means you're stuck in childhood.

What's more childish, being obsessed with grown men who play children's games, or media about adults doing adult things and having adult problems?

DA

....I got laid off from what I had thought was going to be my permanent-for-keeps-till-I'm-60 job THREE DAYS before I turned 30. So I started a whole different life in that decade, than the one I had in the decade before. So. Not entirely unreasonable that one's life CAN change after 30...but that's more down to outside circumstances than conscious choice; and why would anyone CHOOSE to stop reading/watching/playing, just because the calendar has turned over to a certain milestone year?

I can definitely see this. As a fandom-goer in her late thirties, it's hard to relate to people in their teens or early twenties, and can even feel kind of creepy/weird.

yeah, I often feel this way. I sometimes am tempted to just pretend I'm a college student, but ultimately I'm an old fart who still enjoys fandom, and anywho who doesn't like it can go fart in a paper bag.

And then I'll whack them upside the head with my walker.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed -- early thirties rather than late, but I'm starting to feel this more and more, especially since my fandom life started as a college student, and it's starting to hit me now just how much younger than me the same people are now. Yeesh.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
That can be true, and it's also true that some fandoms just... attract a younger age group. But I've also come across people who act very haughty about being in fandom past a certain age, whether they were in fandom and are proud they're not anymore or are observing fandom from a distance, which is what I think the OP is talking about.
