While the age gap can be awkward/difficult, having older fandom friends (30s-40s, mainly) when I was about 14-20 was invaluable. I am 25 now and have friends who are younger. I don't think I am any good with the advice, but we have fun. Maybe it helps that I am not much into particularly sexual fandom stuff. For fic, I tend to stick to non-porn.

Never in my life (IRL or fandom) has my group of friends been all the same age.

While I do feel old on tumblr sometimes, I have noticed that few users over about 23 list their age in the sidebars/about pages, so I think it might be less that there are hardly any older users present, but rather that they are less likely to share their age right off the bat (though I know some who are older than the average tumblr user and proud).

Sorry, this was off topic from the original secret, wasn't it?
starphotographs: ...I'm not that bad, though. And I don't even light things on fire! Well, not regularly... (Izaya (devious))

You know, I think people only bother with writing their exact age in profiles for about five years before they realize that it's a fool's errand. When you do it like that, it needs yearly updating and you'll inevitably forget about it for a little too long and then go back and realize that it isn't your age anymore.

The smart ones go with the year.
