Was with you right up until the end there.

You ought not be a dick about how other people feel about their age.

When you hit mid to late twenties, as I'm sure you remember, you start to become aware that you're barrelling towards thirty at the same time you become aware that the newest generation of adults is already here. It is the first time you feel the passing of time actually affect you.

To clarify It is the first time you feel the passing of time actually affect you in a negative way. up until that realization hits ever milestone had been a good one.

16 = "Yay, I'm old enough to have sex!"
18 = "Yay, I'm old enough to drink!"
21 = "Yay, I'm a proper grown up now!"
25 = "Holy shit I'm 5 years off thirty, All these children wont stop going on about how their old enough to drink and have sex!"

DA

Meh. I only really got that vibe in the last year or so. And I am *cough* well past 25.

Not only that, but it can be a little depressing to reach your 30s and realize that you've spent an inordinate amount of time on your computer reading smutty fanfic or drawing fictional characters fucking. I mean, I love fandom and have no plans on leaving. And I certainly have no plans to stop reading and writing fanfic. But a part of me sometimes feels guilty for not spending that time doing something more "productive" (for lack of a better term).

I had that, then I came round full circle and realised smutty fanfic/art is awesome.

It's just that it's stigmatised in the larger society so I used to feel bad about not being 'productive'. It's the opposite, really - what could be more productive than being creative?

I have a theory that in 20 years time the current outburst of fanfic/art will have a huge impact on cultural output (hopefully in a good way) because a whole generation will have grown up taking it for granted. It will take culture in a different direction. It's already starting to happen with breakthrough fanfic writers writing commercially, and artists who promote their paid, 'legitimate' projects through their smutty fanart blogs.

Society changes. I'm shocked how quickly it's catching up.

Yeah, but not everybody is insecure like that.

I know lots of people are insecure about their age or looks, but some people just enjoy life while they are still alive. If you wanna worry about it you have every right to but your just stressing yourself out.

Everyone dies. Some die young, some die in an accident, some die of old age. It's inevitable so just enjoy life while you have it. You shouldn't stress over something you have no control over. And you shouldn't ever stop doing something you enjoy because of your age. As long as you can keep up with life responsibilities and your not hurting anyone, no one can tell you your doing wrong.

This. I turned 30 this past year and it wasn't a big deal at all to me. I still consider myself to be young and I'm still having fun in fandom, so I don't see myself leaving it anytime soon. Sure, I have a job and adult responsibilities, but it's not as if those suddenly render you unable to have fun. Hell, my parents are in their 70s and I think they were more excited over the Hobbit movies than I was.

I'm 33 with a second baby on the way. What I choose to do online when my kids are in bed or otherwise occupied with their own thing (currently it's the almost 7 year old with Minecraft and Monster High) is nobody's business. And the only thing making me feel old is how bad my hip aches when it's cold outside, not how much time I spend reading smutty fanfic or whatever.

I might've felt that way a bit when I was in my mid twenties, but guess what? I didn't whinge about being "old" because I knew that to do so would be ridiculous and immediately identify me as a melodramatic idiot to everyone who's age 30+.

Kind of like how I might FEEL poor, but actually I have a place to live, food to eat and clothes to wear and I would certainly not bitch about being broke in front of people who didn't have all of those things.
