Not only that, but it can be a little depressing to reach your 30s and realize that you've spent an inordinate amount of time on your computer reading smutty fanfic or drawing fictional characters fucking. I mean, I love fandom and have no plans on leaving. And I certainly have no plans to stop reading and writing fanfic. But a part of me sometimes feels guilty for not spending that time doing something more "productive" (for lack of a better term).

I had that, then I came round full circle and realised smutty fanfic/art is awesome.

It's just that it's stigmatised in the larger society so I used to feel bad about not being 'productive'. It's the opposite, really - what could be more productive than being creative?

I have a theory that in 20 years time the current outburst of fanfic/art will have a huge impact on cultural output (hopefully in a good way) because a whole generation will have grown up taking it for granted. It will take culture in a different direction. It's already starting to happen with breakthrough fanfic writers writing commercially, and artists who promote their paid, 'legitimate' projects through their smutty fanart blogs.

Society changes. I'm shocked how quickly it's catching up.
