I honestly don't understand the whole "I can't relate to younger/older fans" thing at all. Don't you ever interact with people who aren't in your age group in real life? I have coworkers who are more than a decade older and more than a decade younger and while I may not be able to relate to every single thing they're going through, I can still get along with them just fine and even consider them friends.

Besides, it's not as if getting older means you suddenly forget what it was like to be younger.

I think there's a difference between talking to people of different ages in your peer group and talking to people who are still schooling.

FWIW, I made friends with adults online when I was still in school and I was happy that they gave me a chance.

I agree. Diversity is great.

I wonder if people who feel they can't relate to older/younger fans also feel the same about fans who come from another country, who speak another language and have a different culture.

Diversity is great, yes, and you can relate to most people most of the time, but it's nice to have people who are in a similar point in their life to talk with.

And it can make you feel odd or unwelcomed when there's a big difference in age between you and everyone else around you. Same goes for pretty much any other defining trait or interest.

I don't feel that way about older fans, but if the fans I'm talking to are far younger than me, there are just some things that I have to change the subject on.

Like when they want me to sympathize with their parents sending them to bed before midnight. It's so hard not to say "well, if I was your mother, I'd make you go to bed at 9pm like I had to growing up.". Things like that. Especially when the person IS young enough to be my daughter/granddaughter.

There are just certain things that being older and having more life experience puts a different perspective on, but you also know that trying to share that experience is a virtually worthless comparison because they have no/little basis. (Like the old saying: "If you want an answer, ask a teenager. They know everything." I know when I was a teenager, I wholeheartedly agreed with that statement, but now that I'm far beyond my teen years, I know what a silly kid I was back then. ;)
