I think a lot of people have trouble separating "bad person, exists, do not want" from "bad person, fictional, it's okay to like made-up bad people sometimes."

I mean, I think he did a lot of terrible shit, and trying to excuse any of it makes you look dumb. And like you're majorly missing the point to boot. But he was well-written and tragic and had some awesome glimmers of basic decency (like the stuff you listed) in the midst of all the seriously fucked-up stuff, so I like him as an interesting fictional person.
