What bugs me most is the idea that old people are "so cute!" for doing basic adult shit.

They're married! That's so cute!

She has an opinion! That's so cute!

He's wearing clothing that isn't a hospital gown! That's so cute!

Honestly, I have a grandmother who lives with me and is emotionally abusive to me on an everyday basis, yet when I try talking about this with people outside my family, even my old therapist, everyone is like "That sweet little old lady? You're not serious, are you?"

The lady is racist (makes very rude comments about African and Asian races when she herself is Hispanic), incredibly stubborn (you can never argue with her about anything; she HAS to win the argument), and insensitive of other's feelings (calls her own grandson fat when he has an eating disorder), but everyone unrelated to her is just like "Oh, she's just so cute." Yeah, see if you think that when you're related to her.

I ENVY anyone who has one of those stereotypical "bakes cookies and knits you sweaters" grandmothers.

I have a grandmother that is similar to yours (not racist, exactly, since she hates all humans) literally did things to hurt others while I was living with her (both physically and mentally), and just... Everyone she's not related to? 'Omg, your grandmother is so cute/awesome!'

I don't quite get this. People who aren't white are racist about other nonwhite races all the damn time. Why is that surprising?

But don't you know? Only whites can be racist! /sarcasm

(Not directed at you, btw - just at that idea)

I don't think that's what they're arguing--just that they think it's ironic. Except it really isn't. The supposed solidarity between people of color is largely bullshit.

The worst anti-arab remarks I heard at school after 9/11 were from black kids. People weren't exactly holding hands and singing happy songs about togetherness.

I think that depends on who you're talking to. I've run across people who really believe that only whites can be racists IRL, sadly.

These people are called idiots. I'm pretty racist about idiots.

DA

That idiocy has gotten seriously pervasive on tumblr and is driving some people (myself included) bananas. The word racism itself has basically been redefined at this point and you're just begging to get dogpiled if you even suggest otherwise.

Also never criticize Beyonce or you are a racist misogynistic demon creature.

Possibly there's a sentiment that someone who has experienced racism themselves should know better?

OP

I'm grateful to have a grandmother that is in general a very decent person, but cute she is not. She's homophobic (though I think I'm wearing her down) and militantly conservative, and also hilarious and profane and wise. She gives good advice and other advice I completely ignore. And she tells me family secrets I'm not supposed to know because she thinks I'm old enough and why the fuck not. And she's good to tell secrets and problems to because she's old and has decided that nothing is much to get worked up over because shit happens. I love her very much.

is it okay to find some individual old people cute the same way I find other individuals cute?

Yeah, but they aren't cute because they're old. They're cute because they're cute people.

I find old couples adorable, but more in a "you two have been in love for so long and going on strong" way.

(or a "yay you found love again"!)

Or maybe I just like seeing people in love and happy haha. Working couples are cute.

My mom and quite a lot of guys who aren't visibly younger than me act like I'm cute for doing basic adult shit and I'm only 34.

What. I work with elders and I find old couples extremely adorable. I don't give a single fuck about young couples, but people who have made relationships work over 50 or 60 or even 70 years despite hardships and physical limitations are the pinnacle of cute to me.

And this is coming from a confirmed bachelor who cares nothing for romantic relationships in general.
