Re: Nonfandom Confessions

I'm worried that if something unexpected ever happens to me, my parents won't use my preferred pronouns at my funeral. I expect my dad to completely forget, if it's up to him, and if it's my mom's call, I'm sure she'll decide it's ridiculous and just not do it. The fact that I'm worried about this isn't exactly a secret, it's just such a petty thing that I feel weird talking about it.

I don't think it's petty at all. I think it's a legit concern. I've heard of people writing down their funeral/post death wishes in a sealed letter marked to be opened after death or at their funeral, maybe something like that could bring you a bit of peace of mind?

I've been planning to do this for ages, not just because of that, but because I have a large variety of online friends who would never know unless I left instructions to tell them. The problem is, thanks to that, it's such a large undertaking that I keep putting it off...it's ridiculous that I'd have trouble getting to something so important to me, but there you go. I am just that bad of a procrastinator. >_

Because I know my family don't respect my personal beliefs and would host my funeral in a church, I specified in my will and on all my power of attorney documents that my two closest friends were to make my medical decisions and funeral arrangements for me, and left instructions for them regarding my wishes.

If it's worrying you, you should sit them down and have the talk. It doesn't matter if you're young and healthy. I think everyone should have the peace of mind of knowing they'll be treated with respect after death.

Well, it might be a little odd to worry about your funeral specifically, but the underlying issue isn't petty at all. I guess the best fix would be to work on reminding people about your pronouns while you're still alive. Maybe something in your will regarding your wishes.
