Personally? I LOVE having my comment replied to, even if it's just a generic "thanks!" It's more about the knowledge that my comment has been seen and read, not so much about what the author said back. It's just an internet thing -- online, you have no other way of knowing if the author saw what you said.

But if your story has, like, a backlog of 50+ comments I think you can give yourself a break and not reply. ;)
