Comment question

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I just uploaded my first fic to a major fic archive and received more comments than I've ever received before. For most of them, the only thing I really have to say in response is, "Thank you. I'm glad you liked the story." I've tried to add more or reword but it's still pretty much the same thing. Is it weird to have pretty much the same response to all the comments on a fic? What do you think about this? What are your opinions on responding to comments? Do you need to have your comment replied to? If you're the author, do you feel it's really bad form not to respond if the comment is only one word. Would you respond no matter what? Thanks everybody!

Authors do it differently. Some thank everyone and other just respond to what interests them or long critics. I think both are viable options.

As a commenter, I never expect my comment to be replied to unless I've asked a question or started some sort of conversation topic. Mostly I'm just commenting to let the author know I read and enjoyed their work and don't need or expect anything back.

But I think this is one of those topics that everyone has a different opinion on and in the end you just have to kind of go with what works for you. Congrats on all the new feedback!

I agree.

I would also add

Thanks for telling me how much you liked this.

It really made my day to find your comment in the inbox.

Thanks for such detailed and interesting feedback.

I always sincerely mean these things but I say them a lot in response to comments to my fic.

Unless someone's asking me a specific question, I generally say, "Thank you!" on an archive. A lot of time, I'm just getting one or two words of comment, anyway, or "I like this!" If someone takes the time to actually write me a comment on the story, giving specific details of what s/he enjoyed, or how cool this specific thing was, then I'll take time to write a good response.

In my own blog, I usually have had a conversation in the past with the person commenting, so it's a lot easier to respond.

I try to make my responses correspond in length to the comment I'm replying to. For instance, if someone just says, "This was great, loved it!" I'll probably just reply, "Thanks! :3" But if they tell me specific things they liked or quote back their favorite lines to me, I'll try for a more in-depth response, like what I was thinking when I wrote a particular bit they liked or my thoughts on how the characters behaved.

But that's just me. I don't think there are hard-and-fast social rules for this; do what feels right for you.

Personally? I LOVE having my comment replied to, even if it's just a generic "thanks!" It's more about the knowledge that my comment has been seen and read, not so much about what the author said back. It's just an internet thing -- online, you have no other way of knowing if the author saw what you said.

But if your story has, like, a backlog of 50+ comments I think you can give yourself a break and not reply. ;)
