(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)Does what happened to him suck? Absolutely. Is it a devastating pit of misery that will cost him every bit of joy he might have had in the rest of his life? Not at all.
My mother is gradually losing an eye due to medical issues, and while she does grouse and mope about it from time to time it's not like she spends every moment ruminating on the loss. Even with this going on, she's still an overall happy person and is already starting to find ways of adapting. It's a shitty thing to happen (and a heinous thing to do to someone on purpose), but it's not a life-ruiner.
