I feel really bad for coffee anon and I actually hope she was trolling and made the whole thing up because that's better than her life being ruined over an action that may have been over the top but was still a reflex. I know how screwed I am right now in terms of the type of response I'll get, but it's been stewing inside for ages and I had to get it off my chest...I'm sorry...

Tbh that still scares me because it sounds like she just snapped and that could happen to anyone.

I am fairly certain that "Someone MIGHT be looking at my boobs? Boiling coffee in the face!" is not a reflex that sane people tend to have. Also, what about the guy who lost an eye? His life was probably pretty ruined.

Probably digging myself deeper, but I was struck with the suspicion that she had faced severe sexual harassment and possibly assault in the past, because I can easily imagine that level of reflex being born from traumatic experiences...

IMAGINE is the keyword here. From what she said, all we know is that she assumed that someone was looking (NOT TOUCHING, LOOKING) at her boobs, and she blinded him for it. She said NOTHING about past sexual trauma or anything that would even approach mitigating circumstances or psychological hangups. Considering how much scrambling she did to try and justify herself, it seems really, really unlikely that she would have chosen NOT to mention such a thing.

In that case, she wouldn't really be "sane". I agree with you (I'm the anon above who said it sounded like she snapped), but I think she should have had some intense therapy if her ptsd was that bad. And maybe she is in therapy now, if she got a good lawyer who argued mental illness.

Yeah but he used that one eye to look at a woman's breasts, maybe. He doesn't deserve to have it!

If it makes you feel any better, I'm almost certain she did.

With a knowledge of the police and justice system, her story had too many discrepancies (especially given she's talking possible GBH).

Re: Nonfandom Confessions

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
... Eh, it also cost someone the use of one of their eyes, iirc, for something they may not have actually been doing at the time.

I kind of agree, tbh.

Re: Nonfandom Confessions

I feel bad for her but don't condone her actions. But she seemed to know that how she reacted was wrong, so I felt bad for all the attacks she received here. It wasn't helping her situation or frame of mind at all.

I hope it was fake though. Because it's an awful situation for both her and the victim.

I do not feel bad for coffee!anon in the slightest. They (supposedly) overreacted, caused someone to go blind in one eye and are now dealing with the consequences.

That said, while it's a pretty major setback I wouldn't think it would ruin their life. I think if they worked hard and showed some genuine remorse, admitted their mistake and moved on, perhaps they could get a new job and try to straighten things out again.

Provided they react to such situations appropriately in the future.

Yeah... usually getting charged with assault actually does tend to ruin your life. Including your job prospects. No matter how lenient the sentence is, that criminal record follows you for the rest of time and it means for most people you never get to travel again and most places won't hire you.

Re: Nonfandom Confessions

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on your definition of a ruined life. Jobs aren't everything. She might make some really good friends in prison and later achieve spiritual enlightenment.

It would be nice, but I realise it's not always possible. But I'm coming from family members with criminal records who have managed to get things back on track, so I know it's possible for someone, but I think there's a lot of luck involved in finding a place to take you, a lot of time and not fucking it up.

Unless her victums life can be un-fucked, I see no reason to feel bad that hers likely wouldn't be.

I don't feel bad for coffee!anon because coffee!anon did not express remorse for her actions (other than for the way they affected her). I do however hope that this incident was a wake-up call that got them to re-evaluate their perspective and maybe get treatment for anger management and therapy in general.

Re: Nonfandom Confessions

Noooo... Taking your hand off something that's burning you is reflex. Kicking your knee when your doctor hits it with that little rubber thing is a reflex. Throwing hot coffee in someone's face is not a reflex. There's no "she couldn't help herself!" to that action.

Re: Nonfandom Confessions

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
My coffee-anon-related confession: I am really pissed off by all of the people saying that the guy's life is going to be ruined forever OH NOOOOO!

Does what happened to him suck? Absolutely. Is it a devastating pit of misery that will cost him every bit of joy he might have had in the rest of his life? Not at all.

My mother is gradually losing an eye due to medical issues, and while she does grouse and mope about it from time to time it's not like she spends every moment ruminating on the loss. Even with this going on, she's still an overall happy person and is already starting to find ways of adapting. It's a shitty thing to happen (and a heinous thing to do to someone on purpose), but it's not a life-ruiner.

Exactly. Of all the disabilities in the world (and the list grows daily, urgh), being visually impaired is the one where there is the most societal, physical, and financial support (well..in North America, anyways, not sure about the rest of the world), and is the most integrated with (hatethiswordhateithateithateit) "normal" society.

TL;DR: Blinded in one eye? There's an app for that.
