I think that Elementary has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes beyond the names. It's just a slightly better than average police procedural and it's a pity that the creators felt the need to ride on Sherlock's coattails instead of letting it stand on its own.

Fair enough, but I also think Sherlock has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes besides a few details and a bunch of little references that don't actually serve any purpose beyond being a wink to the fans. I mean seriously, this is a show that mocks the idea of Sherlock Holmes having clients.

I think Sherlock is less than a ACD adaptation and more of a modern adaptation of Wilde's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. Like you said, Sherlock has very little ACD canon but it's all over TPLoSH.

Interesting. I wonder if that could explain at least part of why I don't like BBC's Sherlock. I didn't care for The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes either even though I generally love Billy Wilder.

They starting saying in interviews 1/2 way through season 2 they were doing an adaptation of the Basil Rathbone movies(?) not ACD at all.

And I disagree. I think they are doing an amazing job of taking ACD's characters and transplanting them into 21st America, and seeing what changes them and what stays the same. E.g. Holmes going to rehab and NA meetings and his recovery from addiction being a big part of his life is genius IMO. Watson being an accomplished woman is obviously an awesome twist, but I also like how she's a big online dater - ala 'three continents' ACD Watson. Same with Mycroft being a famous chef/ restauranteur, Lestrade being a fame-hound and Mrs Hudson being a transwoman. And there are lots of other things like this that make me think the writers actually put a lot of thought into what they're doing - certainly more than Moffat/Gatiss - even if it can be too much of a procedural at times.
