We've been waiting so long for this episode that a lot of people had built up expectations that were frankly never going to happen. Everything about BBC John indicated he had a temper, but we've had continual arguments about how the reunion would be all casual and forgiving (mostly people who favor the book canon). We've all come up with our own "how Sherlock survived" theory, so of course they wouldn't bother to confirm or explain it. The "case" in this one was less important than the character reunion, so of course it was going to be in the background and pretty unnecessary. As for the characterization...eh. Two years can change a lot about someone.
I understand the complaints people do have about the episode, but it's pretty in keeping with previous episodes and its creators.
