Sherlock BBC, why.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure it's unpopular, but considering the amount of posts and reblogs I've seen around it should be:

I've HATED Sherlock's season 3 first episode. And I loved all about the two previous seasons. Just this one... ugh. I hated what they did with Molly and with Anderson, I couldn't stand Mycroft, I didn't like how John reacted, I didn't like how Sherlock behaved, the whole plot was unforgivably long-stretched and boring with a LOT of slo-mo crap, the soundtrack was horrendous, the deductions are starting to sound more and more ridiculous... JESUS HOW WAS THIS PART OF THE SERIES. Or is it maybe just me not being into it anymore? I don't know. :/

How did John react? (Not up to the task of watching the ep, but curious about this part all the same).

It's not really because of the way he reacted, more like the way it was handled in the episode. There was never really a moment in which I felt they connected the way they did in the previous eps. I'm not sure if it was because the actors are not into it anymore or just plain bland writing.

Anyway, short description: John got angry, punched Sherlock in the face a lot (which he deserved I guess), and after a while went back into the loop. They bonded again over a defused bomb or whatever. It all felt pretty much sterile to me.

yeah...

i think it's better on a rewatch because you know what parts are truly horrendous so it's not as much of a cringeworthy surprise the second time around and you can focus on the good bits of the episode that aren't fragmented to hell or oversaturated with filters/lensflare. there's a good storyline hidden beneath the poor writing. but overall it wasn't up to standard at all.

Ok, so it wasn't me being completely out of it... it just felt different. Yes. the filters were WAY too much too, it looked so polished and cold and fake. But I have never felt this way during the previous eps so I suppose this was overdone.

I'll try to rewatch it though, maybe it'll grow on me. Crossing fingers for next parts, hoping the pampering to fans won't become the status quo for this new season. Meh. I'm so afraid for the new villain.

That probably, or maybe just lack of perspective. We've been waiting so long for this episode that a lot of people had built up expectations that were frankly never going to happen. Everything about BBC John indicated he had a temper, but we've had continual arguments about how the reunion would be all casual and forgiving (mostly people who favor the book canon). We've all come up with our own "how Sherlock survived" theory, so of course they wouldn't bother to confirm or explain it. The "case" in this one was less important than the character reunion, so of course it was going to be in the background and pretty unnecessary. As for the characterization...eh. Two years can change a lot about someone.

I understand the complaints people do have about the episode, but it's pretty in keeping with previous episodes and its creators.

I agree. I don't think the show was ever really as good as people seem to remember.

I'm seeing nothing but praise for 3.01 on tumblr so I think it's unpopular. At first I was enjoying it, but then it went on and on and became apparent that there was no plot, just a jumble of scenes designed to make us laugh at characters for being "pitiful" (ie, having unrequited crushes or survivor's guilt or PTSD) and ship-baiting that would immediately be made into a joke. No character development, no plot advances. A joke.

I'm wondering if Moffat and Gatiss aren't actually geniuses and will later come back and say SEE THIS IS WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE GAVE YOU WHAT YOU WANTED TUMBLR but honestly I don't think so.
It just came off as a mockery of the series.

Sherlock treated a John like shit the entire time and everyone expected John to forgive Sherlock. The whole bomb scene was pretty disgusting and really showed what a prick Sherlock is. People need to hop off the Sherlock dick express on that show. I had no expectations when I watched it, and for that I am glad. The plot was thinner than a grape peel and Sherlock continues to be the worlds biggest ass while everyone makes excuses for him.

What do you mean, you hated what they did with Molly? She seemed pretty much the same as ever to me.

Definitely not unpopular.
