I think one big difference between this and SJW behavior is... this appears to be a term that is specifically drawn from, and created to refer to, a specific condition by the name that's used to refer to it in current times. Like when someone says something is "lame", they are most likely not thinking about someone who can't walk, and when someone says "that's retarded", they're probably not actively comparing it to someone with Down's Syndrome, and so on. Even people who say "that's gay" are mostly not actually equating something with homosexuality, even if that IS a phrase I'd ask someone not to use in my presence.

But "sperging out"? How is that not actually a knowing, intentional mocking reference to Asperger's?

*nod*

Thankfully when I clarified that my beef was about that particular word and how it relates to 'Asperger syndrome' they realized and edited out.

I'm not fond of "retard" and my friends know that I don't like it but that's just because that was used to tease me growing up and nowadays I can let it slide. But "sperging" + "socially retarded" Yeah....ouch.

I'm old enough that I remember when "retarded" was the common term for people with mental challenges, so I cringe a bit when people say that around me too - but for the most part, the people I hear it from are young enough that it's just a slang synonym for "stupid" rather than a word they've heard people use to seriously describe someone's condition, and I try to remember that. And if I have a chance, I will explain that it can be far more hurtful than they were likely intending, but most people I regularly associate with know better already. :/
