I feel like an SJW for getting all upset about the use of a word(though I'd never force them to stop using it or say they should die for it, just ask them to be aware of others' feelings) but I get annoyed when I see the terms "sperg" and "sperging out" because....idk maybe this sounds stupid but it feels like a reminder to be that people find social awkwardness hi-fucking-larious and are the types to laugh at the "fail" when someone is awkward or just plain assumes that all people with Aspergers are just another Chris-Chan or Dai-King-What'shisface.

It sorta hurts because it it sounds like "Asperger's? LOL"

Does that make me an SJW?

This is a word I've never heard of, although I googled it and it doesn't look like it's in common use? Granted you can't help feelings and it looks like it's only use is to mock people with Aspergers so I guess I owuld suggest trying to ignore people who use it.

Yeah... things like intelligence have always been a sore spot for me.

Uh, no, you are definitely not an SJW for this opinion. It's okay to be offended by something.

I don't know why this one word makes me feel shitty. I mean I should know they're not talking about me but...it's just it's still hurtful. I do the best I can to understand how to interact with others and stuff and not act embarrassing or cringeworthy but ...ughh

Thanks

I've never heard those terms before, but as someone with Genuinely Diagnosed Aspergers, they don't make me feel great. I don't think you're being an SJW, just a considerate person.

It just....seeing those types of terms ...it reminds me of high school and being bullied to the point where I honestly thought I was stupid.

SJW is a pejorative term for someone who doesn't give a shit about the cause they're feigning an interest in & outrage over; people all about ego & drama who couldn't care less beyond a few online asspats, really

you obviously care, so by definition you could never be an SJW

Thanks... I guess I worry too much about things

you don't worry too much, you're self-critical, considerate & kind

i just wanted you to know you're as far from an SJW as could be; you've lived it, you've legitimate reasons to speak up, you did so brilliantly

I think one big difference between this and SJW behavior is... this appears to be a term that is specifically drawn from, and created to refer to, a specific condition by the name that's used to refer to it in current times. Like when someone says something is "lame", they are most likely not thinking about someone who can't walk, and when someone says "that's retarded", they're probably not actively comparing it to someone with Down's Syndrome, and so on. Even people who say "that's gay" are mostly not actually equating something with homosexuality, even if that IS a phrase I'd ask someone not to use in my presence.

But "sperging out"? How is that not actually a knowing, intentional mocking reference to Asperger's?

Thankfully when I clarified that my beef was about that particular word and how it relates to 'Asperger syndrome' they realized and edited out.

I'm not fond of "retard" and my friends know that I don't like it but that's just because that was used to tease me growing up and nowadays I can let it slide. But "sperging" + "socially retarded" Yeah....ouch.

I'm old enough that I remember when "retarded" was the common term for people with mental challenges, so I cringe a bit when people say that around me too - but for the most part, the people I hear it from are young enough that it's just a slang synonym for "stupid" rather than a word they've heard people use to seriously describe someone's condition, and I try to remember that. And if I have a chance, I will explain that it can be far more hurtful than they were likely intending, but most people I regularly associate with know better already. :/

From what I understood, sperg did come from asperger's and meant if someone was sperging out, they were flipping out like the stereotype of someone with asperger's.
Checking urbandictionary, and it basically says that.

So anyone who uses that is a big douchebag, and you not a SJW.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Though it's kind of a silly stereotype because from my point of view people in real life with Aspergers that I've met were mostly innocently insensitive sometimes *shrug*. "flipping out' sounds more like a stereotype of more severely autistic people, though....it would still be pretty shitty to joke about that because that's still very "lol, autistic people"

That's basically what those people are doing. They really think that people with asperger's flip out and it's funny to call them shit, that's it.

Urgh...it reminds me of the type of people who think it's funny to do "impressions" of people with Down's Syndrome.

Nope.

SJW =/= 'oversensitive' or being offended by things in general (though they obviously go hand in hand).

SJW = someone who bullies, harasses, or threatens people over the most minor and often unintentional* offenses, and who will insist that people 'should' be offended by something even when others of the affected demographic do not see it as problematic.

Telling someone you're offended by something doesn't make you an SJW. Telling someone that they are an automatic bigot just for using a term, bullying someone for it, or refusing to accept their apologies or explain why your offended does.

* = I'm thinking of making "Misinformed is not Misogyny" a catchphrase.
