Destroy is shitty because Shepard is committing genocide when there are options that don't involve murdering people who trusted her and only ever wanted to live. (Though it is clearly in character for a lot of renegades and I respect that reasoning.) Control is shittily written because absolutely everything in the trilogy up until that point suggests that trying to use Reaper technology, even for good purposes, is a horrible idea. Nice ending, awful buildup, even though I tend to ignore its terribleness and use it for my post game headcanons because it's the most convenient.

But no, causing nebulous unspecified changes to DNA that don't really seem to affect anyone's quality of life is totally worse than wiping out an entire species, and probably killing millions or billions more (for example: quarians and turians trapped in levo star systems) by the side effects. Wow, yes, I am so clearly wrong.

Yeah, maybe I shouldn't have mentioned this one, because synthesis bashing + destroy apologism (not that you are necessarily doing the latter but they tend to go together) is one of the only things I get truly pissy about in fandom. So sick of hearing justifications for genocide from this fandom. So sick of being told I'm a terrible person because I like to NOT KILL PEOPLE.

Um, I think you're taking darkmanifest's reply a little more seriously than it was intended.

However, it seems like this is a sore point with you. Sadly, I haven't yet played the game, so I don't have anything to offer other than I'm sorry people have been grumpy with you?

Yeah, I was just trying to be funny, but I sympathize, because if Dragon Age: Inquisition gets endings like ME3 did, it will be a sore point with me for all eternity. (Don't do it, Bioware. Plz.)

SA. Well, I LOL'd when I read it; the second line was totally comedic.

I think it's likely just a hot button issue for the other anon (and even though I haven't yet played the game, I know the whole end sequence was a hot button issue for many players). Maybe when I get around to playing it years from now, I will return here to shake my fist at you for preferring a different ending. ;)

I don't have any warm mushy feelings for Destroy, because it's objectively fucked up (I don't care that it's the only one where Shepard lives, because Shepard living was never the most important thing for me), but, to me, it's the least fucked up of all the choices available to Shepard. And I accept that to others, Synthesis/Control/Refuse are the least fucked up options, instead. That's fine. What I confuses me is liking any of them. Tolerating them because that's all we've been given so suck it up, okay. But being like "yay, I get to violate the bodily autonomy of everything in the galaxy!" is like...wat. Same with Destroy - "yay I killed an entire race and my loyal crewmember!" Ugh.

Eh, the reason I like Synthesis is because it thematically fits with the rest of the series, if you're playing paragon anyway - overcoming the differences between organics and synthetics and uniting the galaxy? Yeah. It was never just about destroying the Reapers. Considering that the other two options have Shepard either killing billions or literally becoming the most powerful being in the galaxy, yeah I'll take weird Synthesis space magic.

Though to be honest I've never quite understood the bodily autonomy argument and why people zero in on Synthesis because ALL of the endings involve Shepard making a huge choice for the entire population of the galaxy. And making some changes at the molecular level is a lot less questionable to me than genocide, or essentially turning yourself into the galaxy's omnipotent "protector."

(I do think destroy is, unfortunately for me, the best-written ending, in that there is the least wrong with it from a storytelling perspective... but morally I still think it ranks below the other two.)

Sorry for snapping at you, it's a knee-jerk response at this point - synthesis fans get a lot of hate in the fandom, and destroy fans can be particularly obnoxious with their insistence that destroy is ~canon~ and anyone who can't see that is an idiot. Uuugh.

Yeah, and to me, changing every living thing in the galaxy into a different lifeform is a form of genocide in and of itself - every species that ever was has been destroyed on a genetic level, replaced with something else entirely. At least the genocide of synthetics is limited and not even permanent - the geth and EDI can ostensibly be rebuilt in time - but nothing can escape a permanent galaxy-wide DNA swap. And their children and children's children are doomed to inherit that decision in their very blood, in a way they wouldn't inherit the destruction of the geth.

But, anyway, it's cool, we can totally agree to disagree on that angle. And damn sure agree that Destroy is neither canon nor flawless (especially considering the devs are obviously biased towards Synthesis, if anything - I mean, EDI's stunning "I am alive" speech? Please.)
