Then what is your issue?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
How overbearingly he describes women in sexual terms, even in narrative. How female characters are introduced. Danaerys (sp?) especially, at least at the beginning (as far as I could stomach the series).

but ultimately, the series is over-the-top, torture porn, constant shock factor "twists" and, imo, not nearly as clever as fans seem to think it is. it's a study of how much people suck, and reads like a soap opera.

You're basing that off the half of a book you actually read?

When did I say I read half a book? I've not read the entirety of the series, no. Because I'm not a masochist and could be doing better things, like watch grass grow. Beginning referred to the first two books. also forced to watch the series with roommate. still sucked.

NA

I've read three and a half books, and I think "over-the-top", "constant shock factor 'twists'", and "study of how much people suck" are all accurate. I skimmed the torture porn parts and I'm a bad judge of what soap-opera-like writing is, but it is similar to other things I've heard called soap operatic. It couldn't possibly be as clever as some of its fans think it is, because nothing is that clever.

DA. You seem really grouchy. Get off the internet and take a nap.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
da who agrees with this sentiment. That's exactly why I stopped reading.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I've read four books, and I agree completely. While that wasn't the *only* reason I stopped reading -- the long wait between the books wasn't helping -- it was the main reason why I finally bailed on the series.

You must have a very weak stomach if you'd classify something like ASOIAF as torture porn.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I was thinking. It's graphic, but if that's peoples' idea of torture porn... well, they're a lot more innocent than me and I've never even seen ONE Saw movie.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
lol okay. here comes the "everything in the series is totally brilliant and necessary for its ~realism~!" fan. congratulations for not finding disgusting stuff graphic and over the top, I guess?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
No it just means you have a weak stomach. It happens.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Aren't you cute. Everything in the series is not totally brilliant. I for one, as much as I like it, find the writing style to be a little under par.

That being said, I find far more graphic content anytime I ever read non-fiction about real life.I've always found GRRM's description of torture to be rather...bland, and if anyone really finds it as bad as torture porn, then my first question is what sort of stuff do they usually read and watch.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much my thoughts on the matter, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure that matters. Isn't torture porn simply putting forth (arguably pointless) pain for people purely because people can enjoy it? I don't have a particularly weak stomach for that stuff, but, boy, too much and I'm bored of it. It's just I lose the ability to care.

(admittedly not having read the books.)
