I'm a pacifist, but I agree with the (nonviolent) sentiment because I think Game of Thrones sucks and is the most overrated fantasy of this century and last. Also, I'm very confused with this Facebook meme going around bragging about what a feminist he is for how he portrays women. I'm not on the "if you ever let your female characters get raped you are sexist scum!" SJW train, but really? Some kind of feminist godsend to the fantasy genre? please.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Then what is your issue?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
How overbearingly he describes women in sexual terms, even in narrative. How female characters are introduced. Danaerys (sp?) especially, at least at the beginning (as far as I could stomach the series).

but ultimately, the series is over-the-top, torture porn, constant shock factor "twists" and, imo, not nearly as clever as fans seem to think it is. it's a study of how much people suck, and reads like a soap opera.

You're basing that off the half of a book you actually read?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
When did I say I read half a book? I've not read the entirety of the series, no. Because I'm not a masochist and could be doing better things, like watch grass grow. Beginning referred to the first two books. also forced to watch the series with roommate. still sucked.

NA

I've read three and a half books, and I think "over-the-top", "constant shock factor 'twists'", and "study of how much people suck" are all accurate. I skimmed the torture porn parts and I'm a bad judge of what soap-opera-like writing is, but it is similar to other things I've heard called soap operatic. It couldn't possibly be as clever as some of its fans think it is, because nothing is that clever.

da who agrees with this sentiment. That's exactly why I stopped reading.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I've read four books, and I agree completely. While that wasn't the *only* reason I stopped reading -- the long wait between the books wasn't helping -- it was the main reason why I finally bailed on the series.

You must have a very weak stomach if you'd classify something like ASOIAF as torture porn.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I was thinking. It's graphic, but if that's peoples' idea of torture porn... well, they're a lot more innocent than me and I've never even seen ONE Saw movie.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
lol okay. here comes the "everything in the series is totally brilliant and necessary for its ~realism~!" fan. congratulations for not finding disgusting stuff graphic and over the top, I guess?

Pretty much my thoughts on the matter, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure that matters. Isn't torture porn simply putting forth (arguably pointless) pain for people purely because people can enjoy it? I don't have a particularly weak stomach for that stuff, but, boy, too much and I'm bored of it. It's just I lose the ability to care.

(admittedly not having read the books.)

Same! Thank you.

I shudder to think of how pussywhipped GRRM would have to be before the feminists championed him

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
1/10 for effort, but this troll attempt lacks creativity.

One person's "pussywhipped" is another, smarter person's "priorities in order".

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What priorities are that?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
"What priorities are those"

/drive-by grammar pendant

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Please do not judge GRRM's writing by the TV show. The books and the show are too VASTLY different things and the show is not made by GRRM, nor does he approve of many of the changes they've made. You don't have to like GRRM, but please at least have the decency to dislike him for his writing, not for the show producers' bad fanfiction of his writing.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
GRRM writes for some of the show's episodes too, purist moron. And he has even praised it for doing some scenes better than he did.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
and they definitely did. in retrospect, the books read like an unrefined early version of the story in many apects. sure, the books have great moments, too, but the dialogue is simply not as witty, the story is bloated in places where the series just nailed it, being really concise.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
lol are you serious

He's wrote one episode per season. Those aren't the episodes being criticized, Deputy Dipshit
