I really like him as Holmes just because his version of Sherlock is different. This is one of the book canons that had had so many adaptions over the past decades, it'd be boring as hell if there wouldn't be a few changes here and there.

Pretty much. I wouldn't claim he's closest to the original but he's entertaining and much more bearable than certain other recent adaptations.
