...I take it you missed "Tropic Thunder" and "The Soloist," then?

People who act like Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes are the only roles RDJ has ever played annoy me.

Or Chaplin and Zodiac. Just because he's in 2 famous franchises right now doesn't mean that's all he's ever done.

RDJ has never acted, he has always "just played himself in different roles". There's this kind of actors. You like 'em or you don't, but they're there.

I agree. Like Harrison Ford, who built his career with two huge franchises (Star Wars and Indiana Jones) with basically the same lovable rogue character. Those movies are some of my favorites, and clearly a lot of people like that character type, it's no big deal. I don't know why anyone would get their knickers in a twist over it.

He's kind of always played himself. That includes a raging paranoid cokehead in A Scanner Darkly.

Secret 4 - Sherlock Holmes (Guy Ritchie movies)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2014-01-05 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a poster from the "Sherlock Holmes" movies by Guy Ritchie. It shows a close-up of Sherlock Holmes, as portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., who is holding a small handgun, and there is a man with a beard and a black suit and top hat in the background, standing on some stone stairs in a city and looking back over his shoulder.]

RDJ is starting to annoy me because he doesn't act anymore, he just plays himself in different roles. I like this movie franchise, I just wish they'd quit pretending it's Sherlock Holmes because it's more like an Alternate Universe where Holmes is badly Out of Character.

THIS!

Finally, someone who think his Sherlock Holmes is the most OOC ever. (I like him very much in his other roles, but in that one, God just no)

I really like him as Holmes just because his version of Sherlock is different. This is one of the book canons that had had so many adaptions over the past decades, it'd be boring as hell if there wouldn't be a few changes here and there.

It's called character acting. On the one hand, it can lead to typecasting. On the other hand, it gets you jobs cause people think your the right person to play x.

I'm sorry but if it's anything other than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock, it's OOC and an AU interpretation. ;)

To be fair, I think Holmes has been out of character in all 3 of the recent adaptations. I read some of the ACD stories recently where Holmes is definitely not an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. See also BBC Sherlock. AU fanfic.

Lots of actors seem to do that though. Me and my mum always make jokes about people like Jack Nicholson, Sean Connery and Antony Hopkins because they generally (not always) seem to be playing a guy who sounds and acts like their public persona. They've still done some good (highly rated) work in their careers though.

So I'm not going to single out RDJ. And I think like the above named examples he had a few roles under his belt where it's not the case anyway.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
He is the new Johnny Depp.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently you've never read the original stories. RDJ's Sherlock is refreshingly closer to book canon than most of the other adaptations out there.

...was this EVER supposed to be a 'true' Sherlock Holmes adaptation?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-01-05 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I always got the impression that it was meant to be a franchise of Victorian era action-mystery, and just kind of used Sherlock Holmes as a pre-existing and public-domain franchise, so that it's easier to work with characters people are already familiar with and makes advertising easier.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not the most accurate adaptation ever, no. Um. By which I mean, it's a cheerful steampunk AU in which Sherlock Holmes is apparently a Victorian James Bond.

On the other hand, it's a steampunk AU, has John and Mary being awesome and adorable, has John Watson pull a giant fuck-off cannon to take down Moran, and has quite possibly the single slashiest interpretation of Holmes/Watson that I have ever seen in my life. Which takes some doing, let me tell you.

... I can roll with this, is what I'm saying.

Meh. IA with uour assesment of it as an AU with an OOC Holmes, but I honestly DGAF if people be creative with Sherlock Holmes adaptations -- go nuts I say. It's one of those things where playing around is a lot of fun because the concept of Sherlock Holmes is bigger than the stories. The only thing that pisses me off is when people claim creative adaptations are just like canon. Since the Ritchie movies' fandom has never pretended to be just like like canon (unlike some other adaptations' fandoms I could name) they're a-okay with me. Why should I ruin other people's fun by whinging about ~the sanctity of canon~? I just kinda wish the movies were, well, better.

Also um...how many movies have you seen with rdj, out of curiosity?

This is an AU Holmes. The writers know this. The directors know this. The actors know this. The fellas who bring tea and coffee knows this. Maybe they're not calling it an AU Holmes because it's kinda tedious to say over and over in real life?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I really hope you watch more rdj movies
