But IA on the not being intended to be like canon. They were pretty aggressively marketed as "not your grandfather's Sherlock Holmes" or whatever. They definitely wanted to be more the anti-Rathbone, or the anti-20-different-low-budget-movie-adaptations-of-the-Hound-of-the-Baskervilles -- to counterbalance the pop-cultural influence of the old stodgy stereotypes of Sherlock Holmes by exaggerating in the opposite direction.
I do get a kick out of them, mostly for
Watsonthe little things and the sense of fun and energy and not taking themselves too seriously, not so much for the so-called plots/mysteries, which are...well, rather shitty. But then again, I also get a kick out of stuff like Murder by Decree and The Seven Per Cent Solution, so take that as you will.
