...was this EVER supposed to be a 'true' Sherlock Holmes adaptation?

I always got the impression that it was meant to be a franchise of Victorian era action-mystery, and just kind of used Sherlock Holmes as a pre-existing and public-domain franchise, so that it's easier to work with characters people are already familiar with and makes advertising easier.

I thought so too... I also love the films!

then again I am blessed (cursed?) with the ability to not take adaptations too seriously, so it takes a lot to bother me.

Yeah kinda this, though the movies were pretty damn thin on plot and put much more emphasis on the personal relationship between the leads. Maybe more like a Victorian-era buddy cop movie?

But IA on the not being intended to be like canon. They were pretty aggressively marketed as "not your grandfather's Sherlock Holmes" or whatever. They definitely wanted to be more the anti-Rathbone, or the anti-20-different-low-budget-movie-adaptations-of-the-Hound-of-the-Baskervilles -- to counterbalance the pop-cultural influence of the old stodgy stereotypes of Sherlock Holmes by exaggerating in the opposite direction.

I do get a kick out of them, mostly for Watson the little things and the sense of fun and energy and not taking themselves too seriously, not so much for the so-called plots/mysteries, which are...well, rather shitty. But then again, I also get a kick out of stuff like Murder by Decree and The Seven Per Cent Solution, so take that as you will.

This. I enjoyed the movies a lot more when I decided that they were not actually going for the feel of Sherlock Holmes.
